Reed won the Masters in 2018, having opened with a round of 69 that left him T4 after Thursday’s play.

The American is a strong contender again at Augusta this year, and it would no surprise to see him leading after the first round given that he ranks second on the PGA Tour in round-one scoring average this season.

Reed has a history of starting well at Augusta – he posted a first round 68 last year to be T10 at the end of the first day’s play.

The world No. 7 won the Farmers Insurance Open in January having led after a first-round 64, and he was also in the top seven after round one at both the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the WGC-Workday Championship this season.

CAMERON SMITH

Smith ranks third on the PGA Tour in first-round scoring average this season and he looks poised for another fast start at Augusta.

Having made the cut in all four of his Masters starts – including a T5 in 2018 and T2 last year – Smith is clearly well suited to this event and his success at Augusta has been underpinned by consistent first-round performances.

The Australian finished the first round T6 at last year’s Masters, and he’s been T16 or better after Thursday’s play in three consecutive years at this event.

He’s also produced two strong opening rounds this season, finishing the first day T5 at the Farmers Insurance Open and T7 at the WGC-Workday Championship.

MATTHEW FITZPATRICK

To lead after round one

I’ve tipped Fitzpatrick each-way this week and he also looks a great bet to lead at the end of the first round.

The Englishman has climbed to 16^th in the world rankings thanks to his consistent form over the past few months, and he’s posted six consecutive finishes of T18 or better in his last six starts.

Four of those starts began with impressive opening rounds. After day one, Fitzpatrick was T2 at the Genesis Invitational, T1 at the WGC-Workday Championship, T7 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T3 at the Players Championship.

Few players have so consistently started well this year, and another impressive opening round looks likely at a course that should really suit the 26-year-old’s game.
