Back to win: Xander Schauffele

Schauffele has been in great form since the PGA Tour restarted in June, with a run of nine top-25 finishes in 10 starts.

That culminated in a fine performance at the Tour Championship a fortnight ago, where the American posted the best score to finish third in the final FedEx Cup standings.

Schauffele has already shown plenty of major pedigree in his young career, with six top-10 finishes in 12 major starts, including seconds at both the Open and the Masters.

The 26-year-old has finished third, fifth and sixth in his three US Open starts to date so, despite his short price, is well worth backing to make the breakthrough this week.

Each-way shout: Tommy Fleetwood

Fleetwood has twice gone close at the US Open in the past, finishing fourth in 2017 and solo second behind Brooks Koepka a year later.

The Englishman clearly has the game to compete at these typically low-scoring events, and is not daunted by the pressure at majors, having made the cut in all of his last 12.

Fleetwood’s form has been spotty since the June restart but he entered the Portugal Masters last week and played really well, finishing T3.

He capped off that performance with a brilliant final round of 64, which should set him up nicely for Winged Foot this week.

Outside shot: Louis Oosthuizen

I’ve tipped Oosthuizen to lead after the first round this week, and the tricky conditions mean he could even go all the way.

The South African – who won the Open in 2010 and has finished second at all four majors during his career – tends to thrive in the biggest events when scoring is tough.

Oosthuizen finished T7 at last year’s US Open, when a round of 72 on Sunday cost him, and he hasn’t finished worse than T23 at this event since 2015.

The 37-year-old’s excellent tee-to-green game makes him an ideal fit for Winged Foot, and his solid recent form, which includes a T13 and a T6 inside his last four starts, indicates that he’s ready to show up at a major once again.
