Johnson looks by far the best bet to hold the lead after the first round at Pebble Beach.

The world No.2 won this tournament at Oakmont in 2016 and led at close of play on Thursday in both 2015 and 2018.

Johnson ranks third on the PGA Tour in first-round scoring average this year, and he has a great record at this course, having won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2009 and 2010.

While he’s struggled to shed a reputation of choking in majors, Johnson has clearly got the game to win this week and looks as likely as anyone to make a fast start.

Spieth has turned his form around after an awful eight-month run, finishing T3-T8-T7 in his last three starts.

The 25-year-old won the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay and is in the kind of form to repeat that feat this weekend.

Spieth looks likely to start well at Pebble Beach, having opened with a 66 and a 65 in his last two starts.

He ranks fifth in first-round scoring average this year and fired a 66 on Thursday at February’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February.

Mickelson winning this week and completing the grand slam of majors would be a great story, and his record at Pebble Beach suggests he has a chance.

The 48-year-old has won the Pro-Am five times, including this year, when he fired a 65 on the first day.

Mickelson hasn’t been in great form recently, but he’s ranked fourth on the PGA Tour in first-round scoring average.

He led at the close of play on the first day at the 2013 US Open and can get off to a similarly strong start at Pebble Beach.
