14:10 COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE

TOP PICK: MR ADJUDICATOR Second choice: Whiskey Sour

These big-field competitive handicaps take plenty of sorting out at The Festival.

It’s nice to be able to eliminate some of the field in order to form a shortlist, and historical trends are one way of compiling a list of strong contenders.

This race, for instance, hasn’t had a winning favourite in the last decade. In that time an incredible six winners of this contest have returned at 20/1 or bigger.

Horses aged five and six account for eight of the winners over that period. Horses trained by either Willie Mullins, Paul Nicholls or Dan Skelton won eight of the last ten.

The ultra-consistent MR ADJUDICATOR fits the bill, and has the assistance of the capable Paul Townend in the saddle for the aforementioned Mullins yard.

15:30 GOLD CUP

TOP PICK: NATIVE RIVER Second choice: Clan Des Obeaux

This is the biggest race of the week, the ultimate prize in National Hunt racing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The three horses at the top of the early market for the race have strikingly different profiles.

NATIVE RIVER comes back to attempt to retain the crown he secured with guts and determination last year.

Presenting Percy, expertly guided towards the race by the secretive stable of Patrick Kelly, is Ireland’s chief hope.

Clan Des Obeaux seeks a hat-trick that started with a shock King George back in December.

Richard Johnson’s mount NATIVE RIVER has been tenderly campaigned since last year’s success and may not find it as hard as recent winners to go back-to-back. He’s my idea of the winner.

16:50 GRAND ANNUAL CHALLENGE CUP

TOP PICK: MARRACUDJA Second choice: Theo

This race has had a mixed bag of winners over the last few years and no particular trends stand out.

MARRACUDJA looks overpriced for the Skelton stable. Conditions will suit, and he’s well-weighted and in reasonably good form.

He could have gone under the radar.

17:30 MARTIN PIPE CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS' HANDICAP HURDLE

TOP PICK: BIG TIME DANCER Second choice: Style De Garde

BIG TIME DANCER comes into this race after victories at Kempton and Doncaster.

If the ground continues to dry out and the forecast is right then it could bring in the Jennie Candlish runner, who looks well-weighted on best form.

OTHER TIPS FOR FRIDAY:

13:30 Triumph Hurdle

With three winning favourites in the last four years, it might pay to keep it simple in this race.

Younger horses just starting out their National Hunt careers line up and I’m going to side with Nicky Henderson’s PENTLAND HILLS . He’s one of my best each-way bets of the week.

Paul Nicholls QUEL DESTIN is also worth a saver on the win market.

14:50 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle

The unbeaten BIRCHDALE has done nothing wrong, and should give Nicky Henderson another winner on the way to the ‘top Festival trainer’ title.

16:10 Foxhunter Challenge Cup

PACHA DU POLDER  is a double-figure price in the early market for this race, despite winning it in the last two years.

He was narrowly beaten in 2016 in this contest under a very inexperienced rider. Barring that, he might have been lining up here having won the last three renewals.

He has to be backed each-way.
