2:05 HAYDOCK

TOP PICK: JUST HISS

Second choice: Borderforce

This is a tough opener where not too many horses can be eliminated from our potential selections.

If the juice stays in the ground then Borderforce has to be considered. His Class 2 handicap win at Ripon a month ago reads well in the context of this race.

JUST HISS has been third the last three times he has competed on a racecourse, but it’s a third place from last year in this race that suggests he can win this from a couple of pounds lower in the handicap.

2:25 NEWMARKET

TOP PICK: PRETTY POLLYANNA

Second choice: Fairyland

The relatively lightly raced PRETTY POLLYANNA looks head and shoulders above all the other fillies in this race.

Aidan O’Brien’s three entries should be respected considering his record in the race but they all look well exposed. The best of those looks to be Fairyland.

2:25 Newmarket: Pretty Pollyanna

3:15 HAYDOCK

TOP PICK: AEOLUS

Second choice: Dakota Gold

Next is a challenging sprint handicap.

AEOLUS is really interesting at a big price. The blinkers are back on and he’s dragged back in distance from nearly seven furlongs to the bare minimum.

The way he ran last time suggests that might suit. He won a race of this quality at Newmarket earlier in the season when encountering a bit of give in the ground.

3:15 Haydock: Aeolus
{{::outcome.FormattedDecimal}} {{::outcome.Numerator}}/{{::outcome.Denominator}} 25/1

3:40 NEWMARKET

TOP PICK: MORDIN

Second choice: Masham Star

The big race of the day, the Cambridgeshire, with a field of runners only beaten for quantity by the Grand National.

This race often has a favourite at double figures, but only one market-leader has won in the last decade. Huge-priced winners include 25/1, 40/1 and 50/1 for last year’s victor Dolphin Vista.

We need to look at horses aged six or under. This rare nine-furlong distance might allow MORDIN to get his head in front again, following four runner-up efforts in his last five races.

Prior to that he won at Yarmouth, Lingfield and Kempton to start his career with a hat-trick. He can get back to winning ways at a generous weight.

3:40 Newmarket: Mordin
