14:05 Haydock

Top Pick: Mind The Crack | Second Choice: Sir Ron Priestley

Mark Johnston trains four of the seven runners of this race and it wouldn’t be a great shock if he trained the first three home.

MIND THE CRACK is my top pick as he looks to still be improving and this step up in trip looks to be well within his capabilities.

Johnston has booked a very successful jockey at Haydock in Richard Kingscote and I can see him going out in the lead and not being caught.

Sir Ron Priestley may benefit from a smaller field than the one he faced at Royal Ascot and it’s likely he just went too fast that day. If he is able to dictate his own pace, he could be very dangerous for in-form jockey Franny Norton.

14:25 Sandown

Top Pick: Via Serendipity | Second Choice: Escobar

The Challenge Handicap is as fiercely competitive as ever, with a number of horses with great chances.

History Writer is quickly becoming known as a Sandown specialist following his victory in a similar race three weeks ago, but I think 97 is a high mark for what he’s achieved. He needs to have luck on his side because of his preferred riding style of being held up, and with that in mind I’ve looked elsewhere.

I like the look of the Stuart Williams-trained VIA SERENDIPTY, who is ridden by Australian maestro Kerrin McEvoy.

He won the same race at Sandown in 2018 that History Writer won three weeks ago and has since run well in better races. He returns here on the back of a very easy victory at Chelmsford just over two weeks ago.

At the current prices, he’s certainly my idea of a good each-way bet.

Escobar is finding himself dropping down the handicap and one of these races is well within his reach this summer, it’s just very difficult to judge when.

15:00 Sandown

Top Pick: Hidden Message | Second Choice: Modern Millie

The Distaff for fillies and mares over one mile is a very open race and I think you’ll see lots of movement in the market.

The ante-post favourite is Encapsulation, who runs on debut for Betway Ambassador Andrew Balding having recently been purchased out of the Noel Meade yard. Her new owner, Barbara Keller, actually won this race as an in 2015 with Blond Me, who was also trained by Andrew Balding.

She has only ever raced three times, though, and while I believe she does have class, sometimes these races become tactical affairs and it pays to side with a horse with more racecourse experience.

The horse I’ve sided with is HIDDEN MESSAGE, who has only ever raced four times in her career but one of which was a Group Two in France, where she was a fast-finishing fourth, only beaten by under two lengths.

Before that she ran behind Muchly at Ascot but was given a lot to do that day and again did her best work at the finish, which is ideal for Sandown’s stiff uphill climb.

Modern Millie could also be overpriced and is worth backing each way.

15:15 Haydock

Top Pick: Al Muffrih | Second Choice: Melting Dew

Trainer William Haggas has never won the Old Newton Cup, but I strongly believe that he’ll go very close this year with the unexposed AL MUFFRIH.

The Sea The Stars gelding is at the head of the market, but I think he’s still ahead of his handicap mark. He has only run five times in his career and hasn't reached the level his yard hoped he would, but some horses take a few years to really develop.

On his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket in May, he was noticeably free to post and then proceeded to pull hard and was very keen throughout the race, sacrificing any real hope of winning and it’s a testament to the horse’s ability that he was beaten by less than two lengths.

He followed that up with a victory at Redcar three weeks later and has been kept for what looks like a summer campaign, starting with this race off a mark of 97.
