13:50 Newmarket

Top Pick: Migration  | Second Choice: Tulfarris 

The opening handicap on Day Two of the July Festival at Newmarket looks an incredibly tough task to find the winner as you’re going to need a lot of luck in running and most of these three-year-olds are still improving with each run, so it’s hard to know just how good they are.

After watching numerous re-runs of many races at Royal Ascot, I have landed on MIGRATION as my top pick.

His trainer David Menuisier was granted his wish that he would get in to the Britannia as he snuck in at the very bottom, however, the amount of rain that fell within those 24 hours would have been far away from the trainers wish-list.

Migration travelled very well throughout the race and came to make his winning move, but just couldn’t pick up as he had done on faster ground previously. Back to that desired fast ground now, he should continue his upward progression and will be hard to beat, granted no traffic issues.

I think Tulfarris should not be overlooked for the in-form Charlie Fellowes yard as he had a tragic run in the Britannia and would have been much closer for a clear run.

Others to note are Majestic Dawn and Dark Vision for trainer Mark Johnston, who has won this race five times in the past 10 renewals and all of his runners should be closely followed.

Top Pick: Caliburn  | Second Choice: Manjaam 

CALIBURN is my top pick in this race for Betway Ambassador Andrew Balding who comes here off the back of a convincing victory at Pontefract, where he travelled, quickened and stayed impressively.

Before that, on his debut for Balding (previously trained by Hugo Palmer), he finished fifth behind current ante-post favourite for the Ebor, First Eleven, in the Jorvik Stakes at York; a race that has thrown up various winners since.

He has always shaped like a horse who would appreciate a step up in trip and this one mile and six furlongs distance looks sure to suit.

Manjaam, who stayed on very strongly in the Winton Cup, is one who may nick a place at a big price off a featherweight.

16:45 Newmarket

Top Pick: Rum Runner  | Second Choice: Breathtaking Look 

Tom Queally, known primarily for his piloting of Frankel, has only had two winners this year but I think he has a very good chance of riding another when he rides RUM RUNNER for Richard Hannon in this 7 furlong handicap.

Rum Runner only ran last Saturday at Sandown Park, but was trapped on the inside and was kept hold instead of being brought very wide to mount a challenge and still managed to finish strongly. The fact they’re running him again so soon, suggests he is none-the-worse for that excursion to the Esher racecourse.

He is currently on a mark of 83, which is two pounds lower that the mark of 85 that he won a C&D handicap off last August.

17:20 Newmarket

Top Pick: Saaheq  | Second Choice: Orvar 

The Musselburgh handicap that SAAHEQ won in April has worked out very well with a handful of winners coming out of that race and it is worth remembering just how convincing this five-year-old was that day.

Since then, he was only beaten 5 lengths in a competitive big field handicap at York, again a race that has thrown up plenty of winners since.

Following that run, he finished seventh at Chelmsford but had reported to have burst a blood vessel, which explain his average performance and why we haven’t seen him since.

If he shows anything like that form at Musselburgh, then he’ll take plenty of beating under Alistair Rawlinson.
