With £10,000 up for grabs on Saturday, here are Alan Alger's best horse racing tips for Haydock and Newmarket to get you started.

13:45 HAYDOCK

Top pick: Paradise Boy 11/2

This small-field three-year-old handicap kicks off a great Betway-sponsored card at the Lancashire track.

It's very important to note that Saturday's card will take place on ground that was already being described as soft on Friday, ahead of more rain and another whole meeting of evening racing.

Although there are only six scheduled runners going to post, it's hard to pick through their form for anything favourable to easing ground.

Likely market leader Prejudice has run on good-to-soft but was far from convincing. He's upped in trip here, but doesn't appeal at such a restrictive price.

I really like PARADISE BOY, who has a decent pedigree involving some soft-ground winners. He looks a much better bet and could surprise.

14:10 NEWMARKET

Top pick: Mr Diamond 4/1

There's not as much rain forecast for Newmarket, but you'd have to expect their current good-to-firm ground to be slightly softer.

This is another three-year-old handicap that, in the last two seasons, has been won by horses at double-figure prices and towards the bottom of the weights.

MR DIAMOND won at Wetherby before being upped in class at Goodwood last time out. That was a bit of a flop, but not so much that he couldn't bounce back here under more favourable conditions.

His form on good-to-soft reads as 211, with the only defeat an extremely narrow one.

14:45 NEWMARKET

Top pick: Proschema 9/1

A stayers' handicap for older horses.

PROSCHEMA steps back up in distance here and looks like he will go very well.

He was a 50/1 no-hoper in the St Leger last season, but still ran with credit.

This is much more his level and, on the evidence of his two runs at York over this distance, he will certainly be thereabouts at the business end of this race.

15:35 HAYDOCK

Top pick: Safe Voyage 12/1

Saturday's feature, the Betway John Of Gaunt, has a great field.

Low draws have been favoured in recent years, with only two of the last 10 winners coming from a stall above No.3.

Only two of those winners were the favourite, while two winners in the last decade returned at a double-figure price.

SAFE VOYAGE ticks a lot of boxes here and was already a market-mover on the ante-post for this race. He handles the going, the track, and is drawn in stall three. He's a confident selection.

OTHER TIPS

I like the look of PILASTER 1/1, who is a rare Flat runner in the UK for Willie Mullins.

The selection has to prove herself on the going, but is capable based on Group 2 success at Goodwood. Her soft ground run was in a Group 1, which might explain her poor showing.

DANZENO 7/2 should go very well in the Listed Betway Achilles sprint, also at Haydock (15:00). He won at Nottingham earlier in the week so looks back to form and he has won on soft going in the past.
