14:05 York
The “Get Knotted” Handicap has been named in honour of the Michael Dods trained gelding Get Knotted, SP who has won this race for the past three years – which also happen to be his last three victories.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that he’s been campaigned with this race in mind again and runs here off a mark of 90, the lowest in all of his attempts. But can he win it for a fourth time?
Starlight Romance SP finished runner-up in this race last year off a 3lbs higher mark and always runs very well at York, so can revenge be exacted for an in-form Richard Fahey yard?
Danny Tudhope continues his quest to become champion jockey as he rides Medahim SP, who was backed at fancy prices last time out at Newmarket on his second start for trainer Ivan Furtado following his switch from the Richard Hannon stable. Can he give his rider another Saturday success?
14:25 Ascot
Only eight runners go to post for this handicap over the straight mile at Ascot, but what it lacks in numbers, it gains in competitiveness. Ante-post favourite, Motakhayyel 100/30 - a winner last time out at Newmarket - bids to take his career tally to four wins from five starts.
Flashcard 7/1, who finished less than three-lengths behind him last time, re-opposes and finds himself with a handy weight pull. Will he get closer or will the Jim Crowley ridden colt improve again?
Rod Millman won the Super Sprint at Newbury last Saturday and he saddles Prince of Harts 15/2 who finished a staying-on third at Ascot last time. He’s improving and is the mount of the in-form Hollie Doyle, although she only has a 7% strike rate when riding at the Berkshire course.
Kuwait Currency 25/1 has slightly disappointed as a three-year-old but if he runs a similar level and topspeed figure to his victory at Salisbury last year in the Stonehenge Stakes, he’ll certainly represent good value at his current price.
14:40 York
There is a little doubt that if Flying Pursuit SP wins this race then next year it will be renamed to honour the Tim Easterby gelding, who is bidding to win for the third consecutive year!
In this fiercely competitive Sprint Handicap it’s very difficult to tell who’ll come out on top, but the Michael Dods-trained Camacho Chief SP has a very progressive profile and was a convincing winner last time out at Haydock. Can he continue his upward curve under Paul Mulrennan?
Glenamoy Lad SP is having his first start of the season following a stint in Dubai in the winter. He often comes into his own a bit later in the year with his four career wins coming in August, September, October and November. However, he is on a very handy mark, if he’s primed first time out this season.
7 out of the last 10 winners of this race were drawn low and current ante-post favouite Gulliver SP has been gifted a favoured stall 7.
15:00 Ascot
The International Handicap has certainly been a bookmaker’s friend in the past 10 years with only one favourite taking the spoils - that was Librisa Breeze in 2016 for Dean Ivory and Robert Winston when he returned at 4/1.
The year prior to that, Heaven’s Guest retuned a 7/1 winner for the Richard Fahey yard, but those two winners mentioned are the only two single-figure priced winners in the previous 10 years!
With winners priced at 50/1 (2017) 40/1 (2009) and 33/1 (2014 & 2013), punters have often struggled to pick the winner of this mid-summer handicap over 7 furlongs. It goes without saying that you also need plenty of luck in running!
Ascot specialists Ripp Orf 12/1 will be high on most punters lists and they find themselves at the top of the market following good recent runs and both being drawn high, which has thrown up plenty of winners in years gone by.
The Kevin Ryan trained Hey Jonesy 25/1 has been re-routed here instead of the Stewards Cup at Goodwood next week, a move which suggests the horse is thriving and a reproduction of some of his performances in group races should see him go close.
No three-year-old has won this race in the previous ten years but Fanaar 14/1, a winner of his two previous starts, bid to buck that trend.
At bigger prices, Intisaab 33/1 could outrun their huge odds with conditions to suit.
