The Mares’ Handicap Hurdle kickstarts this week’s competition and, as ever, it’s a very competitive race.

Danse Idol  has always been highly regarded at Ditcheat and, on her seasonal debut, she may be hard to beat for Paul Nicholls, who is synonymous with having winners at his local track.

Her connections won this race last year with If You Say Run, who runs in the Novices’ Chase (14:25) a little later on the card.

At a bigger price, it could be worth siding with Kalahari Queen  for Jamie Snowden, who has started this season in flying form. She’s talented on her day and this could have been her early season target before going back over fences after this race.

14:05 Aintree

The Philip Hobbs-trained War Sound  won this race last year off a mark of 136 and returns this year off just 2lb higher.

He was mightily impressive last year when sauntering clear to win by six lengths.

This horse is a slight enigma but does always run well first time out, which is often the best time to catch him.

14:40 Aintree

It’s always very hard to find the winner of Pertemps qualifiers, as there’s a long-term focus on trying to get into the Final off the best handicap mark possible.

Diomede Des Mottes  ran very well in the Persian War Hurdle at Chepstow last month, making eye-catching headway at the end of the race.

He’ll appreciate stepping back up in trip and should run very well for Dan and Harry Skelton.

15:35 Wincanton

The Badger Beers Trophy was won last year by Present Man  , whose owners are also the sponsors of the race.

He is bidding for a third straight win in this contest, but is relying on pilot Bryony Frost’s recent bad luck to change.

Paul Nicholls’ other runner, Give Me A Copper  , has always threatened to win a big pot. This is a lot easier than some of his tougher assignments last year and he could be tough to beat.

He will be hunted out the back and will no doubt be played late to bring out his stamina.
