14:00 EPSOM

Top pick: Le Don De Vie | Second choice: Red Hot

Derby Day kicks off with a handicap over 1m2f and my top pick is LE DON DE VIE, trained by new Betway ambassador Andrew Balding.

The gelding never won in three starts as a two-year-old but wasn’t without promise and got his head in front in a competitive Novice Stakes at Epsom at the Spring Meeting.

Martin Dwyer is on board, partly because he can do the low weight of 8 stone 2lbs.

Owner Janice Mariscotti is a huge Tottenham fan and the rumour is that she’s chosen not to attend the Champions League final in favour of a trip to Epsom Racecourse, which is a tip in itself!

14:35 EPSOM

Top pick: Veracious | Second choice: Awesometank

VERACIOUS is the top pick in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes. Although she will likely go off a short price, I really can’t see what can beat her if she performs.

She travelled really well at Newmarket on her seasonal debut just under a month ago and that outing should put her spot-on for this assignment.

She seems to possess natural speed, which will help over this course and distance and she really should take all of the beating under Ryan Moore.

15:45 EPSOM

Top pick: Eeh Bah Gum | Second choice: Harome

The Investec Dash is often branded as the fastest five-furlong race of the season and you need a lot of luck in running to go close.

EEH BAH GUM ran last Saturday at York and repeatedly suffered trouble in running and flew home to finish eighth.

I’m convinced this horse is an improving sprinter and, providing he gets that luck in running, he can go close for trainer Tim Easterby, who won this race with Captain Dunne in 2011.

My second pick is Harome, who looks as though he’ll land a big spring handicap this summer. An encouraging last run at York was a hint that it might come sooner rather than later.

16:30 EPSOM

Top pick: Norway | Second choice: Japan

As ever, the Derby is a fiercely competitive affair. My top pick is NORWAY, who reminds me of Wings of Eagles, the winner of this race two years ago.

He has strong two-year-old form, but always gave the impression that he would be better suited going up in trip as a three-year-old.

On his seasonal reappearance, this son of Galileo was ridden like a stayer and a faster pace would have suited him and it took him time to get going.

As Aidan O’Brien has said, all of his horses would come forward for their trial runs and that should have put him spot on for this race, which is obviously the race they’d rather win, so you can expect him to be in top condition.

The second pick is Japan for the same connections. He will definitely come on from his reappearance, when he finished fourth in the Dante a couple of weeks ago at York.

He looked in need of the run after suffering a set back a few weeks prior but, with that issue ironed out, he could strike under Wayne Lordan, who recently rode Hermosa to success in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

He certainly has the class to win the Derby.
