13:50 SANDOWN

TOP PICK: ADMIRAL BARRATRY  | Second choice: Senior Citizen

There has only been one winning favourite of this race in the last decade, with an average winning SP in that period of just over 10/1.

Horses aged five and six account for all of the winners since 2008, which means Mill Green from the Nicky Henderson yard is up against it as the only seven-year-old in the field.

An outsider I like is ADMIRAL BARRATRY, he won on his first start for trainer Lucy Wadham on Boxing Day, but has disappointed up in distance since. Back down to a suitable trip, he looks a value call.

14:05 WOLVERHAMPTON

TOP PICK: WAHASH  | Second choice: Pinnata

This is a decent all-weather contest which acts as a trial for the first big flat turf handicap of the year at Doncaster.

It's been won by a horse aged five or younger in each of the past seven years.

Three favourites won in that time and in the last decade only one horse at a double-figure SP has got its head in front. Unusually for an all-weather race, horses coming back from a long break do not seem to be inconvenienced, as evidenced by last year’s winner Big Country and 2016 winner Keystroke.

That leads me to fancy WAHASH from the Richard Hannon Jr stable. The same owners won this with Nimr in 2017.

14:25 SANDOWN

TOP PICK: SOLOMON GREY | Second choice: First Flow

The ground could be quite testing for this handicap hurdle, with Sandown’s hurdle course coming up with heavy places and churned up by Friday’s card.

SOLOMON GREY has a nice low weight and acts well on a soft surface. Off the back of a highly respectable effort when runner up in the Listed Lanzarote down the road at Kempton, he can go one better here.

TOP PICK: FAVORITO BUCK'S | Second choice: Vinnie Lewis

Ahead of a huge week for Harry Cobden and Paul Nicholls, they can take this pre-Cheltenham Saturday contest with FAVORITO BUCK’S.

There is a small question mark on softer ground, but it’s worth taking a chance on a horse that looks very well-handicapped and lined up for this race.
