The further up in trip that Jonbon 1/3 goes, the better I think he will be. I know his trainer thinks he’s going to end up being a Gold Cup horse in time but, despite that, he should have enough over the minimum distance here.

I didn’t think he was great when he was second to El Fabiolo in the Arkle, but he’s much better than this field and should come on for that run. You never know with horses, though, and sometimes they can just be over the top come Aintree. If he’s not, he should win this well.

Gordon Elliott’s Au Fleuron 14/1 ran well enough in the Martin Pipe for me to think he’s worth another go. He’s not lived up to his early promise yet, but he’s still only six and I’d say there’s some improvement in him once he gets it all together.

Gatsby Grey 9/1, who won this last year, are also horses to keep on side of.

Dark Raven 7/2 ran well in the Supreme before being slightly outclassed. He’s the type who’ll improve with racing and it would no shock if he ran well again.

The same can be said for Jonjo’s Springwell Boy 9/1, who really impressed me at Ascot two starts ago. I think he could be very good.

Although the form hasn’t worked out as yet, you can take nothing away from the way that You Wear It Well 6/1 did it in the Mares’ Novices' Hurdle. She’ll take some getting from the front.

The market will tell you everything you need to know about the Liverpool Hurdle. There are so many with chances, but often in these races the market close to the race will tell you if the horses look over the top from a long season. My gut tells me that Champ 4/1 are the ones to beat.

And the comes the big one! I’d love to be on the back of Any Second Now 11/1. He seems in grand form. He’s got top weight, so the stats are against him, but he loves it around here and I wouldn’t swap him for anything!

You need plenty of luck in this race and it often pays to throw a few darts. I think Capodanno 16/1 will run well. He’s been campaigned lightly and could be a Grade 1 horse.

I also like the well-backed Ain’t That A Shame 8/1, who has been really popular in the market. He’s lightly raced but has a good profile for this race now.

Enjoy D’Allen 66/1 was a horse everyone wanted to be on last year, but it didn’t happen for him. He’s shown little this year, but his season might have been geared around this race, so I think he’ll give Simon Torrens a good spin, too.
