Alan Alger: My best value bets for day one at Royal Ascot
Our man at the course talks you through his top tips for Tuesday's action, including some enormous each-way shots...
Make the most of our brilliant Royal Ascot offer: Money back up to £10 if your horse loses the first race, every day.
2.30 - Queen Anne Stakes
Lightning Spear and Mutakayyef seem to be massively up against it with the statistics for horses older than five in this race reading terribly.
There have been a number of well-fancied horses of that age that have failed in the last decade.
That could mean that Ribchester is a fantastic bet to win the race but, at a price of around even money, it’s not going to be a hugely profitable shout.
Even a successful each-way punt coming second or third will return at least that if it’s in double figures.
So the best play is backing a big-priced horse to run well.
With that in mind I’ll go for DEAUVILLE each-way at .
I envisage Aidan O’Brien’s 4-year-old staying on powerfully under Ryan Moore to grab a place, and hopefully something better towards the end of the contest.
3.05 - Coventry Stakes
While it’s great to see horses from abroad competing at the meeting, the comparative level of form and well-being always has to be taken on trust.
Just how good will Wesley Ward’s two-year-olds be? We can assume extremely good. But how that compares with the British and Irish form is a hard equation.
Ward runs Arawak here and I’m suggesting we swerve it to focus on form that we’re more familiar with.
I’ll take a scatter gun approach and back a few each-way at big prices that are once-raced and victorious, which statistically is the best way to come into this race.
I’ve narrowed it down to NEBO ( ), PRINCE OF THE DARK ( ), RAJASINGHE ( ) and ZAMAN ( ).
3.40 - King's Stand Stakes
Luck will certainly play its part in this high-class cavalry charge.
Lady Aurelia will of course be popular based on her devastatingly impressive win in the Queen Mary 12 months ago.
This isn’t the type of race I tend to fare well in so I’ll give a tentative vote to MUTHMIR each-way at .
Hopefully Jim Crowley will steer him through trouble late on to grab at least a place.
4.20 - St James's Palace Stakes
Churchill is rightly odds-on and should do enough to win.
But I like RIVET coming back in trip and would much rather be on this William Haggas inmate at , each-way of course.
5.00 - Ascot Stakes
This looks a fantastic race and will no doubt take some winning.
National Hunt stables have dominated recently and it will pay to concentrate on that end of the game.
The dual-purpose yard of Ian Williams might land this with WOLFCATCHER ( , who can do more in this at the age of five than the recently stats-negative age of four.
5.35 - Windsor Castle Stakes
This race has had some hugely-priced winners in the last decade, so let’s try and find another one.
MOKAATIL will know his job today and hopefully put a slow start at Salisbury on his debut out of his head.
He ran on to finish strongly there and with that tardiness eliminated he could go close at a huge price of . He represents a decent each-way bet.
