Andrew Balding: My thoughts on our weekend runners
The Betway ambassador assesses the chances of his Saturday and Sunday runners at Brighton and Newbury.
Saturday
We only have one runner on Saturday and that is Spirit Warning , who runs at Brighton.
I have a feeling that the track might suit him and bring him to life a little bit. He’s a horse with ability but has developed a mind of his own.
On a going day, he’s good. He’ll win races this year and, hopefully, he’ll give Bradley Harris a nice spin tomorrow.
Sunday at Newbury
It’s no secret that Alcohol Free isn’t at her best visually just yet. There is plenty of sun forecast and it’s amazing how it brings them on.
Her work has been very good but, whatever she does in the 14:10, she’ll improve massively with all roads leading to Newmarket for the 1000 Guineas.
Oo De Lally has got a lot to find, but we’ve found out that he doesn’t quite stay a mile, so we’re bringing him back in trip for the 14:45. His fitness levels are good as he’s had two runs recently.
He might not want the ground this quick, so we’ll have to assess the situation as we go, but he’s a talented horse and, going forward, he might be suited by 7f or even a stiff six.
Foxes Tales is a lovely horse who has never really shown a great deal at home, but pleasantly surprised us with his showing on his debut at Kempton.
He looks well in himself and it will be interesting to see if he handles faster ground in the 15:55. His half-brother, Fox Chairman, won this race a few years back, albeit in different conditions.
Zuraig is a lovely horse. He had a setback last year but had shown a fair bit in his work. It’s always difficult to gauge first time out, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he ran well in the 16:30.
Good Birthday wouldn’t want the ground too fast in the 17:05. We know how good he is as he was placed in a Cambridgeshire at three, which isn’t easy to do. He seems to have improved for the winter break and could win a race of this nature this season.
Arctic Vega is stepping up in trip now. He’s come on since Doncaster and has been pleasing me in his work. He could run well in the 17:05 if he handles the faster surface.
