Andrew Balding: My thoughts on our six Saturday runners
The Betway ambassador previews his weekend rides, including five at Newbury and one at Newmarket.
Newbury runners
It’s a big task for Auriferous (13:15) going up against Mojo Star, who was placed in the Derby, but there is some fantastic prize money on offer. With a bit of luck, we can take a slice of it. He’s hit the woodwork on a number of occasions now and looks as though he may go close again.
Masekela (13:45) is a horse we rate very highly. He is taking on some smart horses, but this looks like a nice race for him. He won very well first time out and did little wrong at Newmarket last time, too. He is a high-class horse who brings the best form into the race.
Recovery Run (14:20) ran really well last time out. He was group placed last year and I think he’s ready to have a go at the extra distance again. It is a very strong race, but he’s a capable horse.
Nothing has gone right for Tactical (15:30) this year, but we know the high level of ability that he possesses. These are his optimum conditions though. Seven furlongs on good ground will suit him well and he could go nicely if things fall into place.
Arctic Vega (16:00) has been frustrating this year. If he settles, he should go very well. It’s key that he settles early in the race, which he hasn’t done on every occasion this season.
Newmarket Runner
Goolwa (14:00) did well last time at Kempton and she looks as though she wants this step up in trip now. The only concern is how she will handle the faster ground as she’s only run on soft ground and the all-weather in the past. We’ll see how she gets on.
