Andrew Balding: My thoughts on our Sunday runners
The Betway ambassador previews his seven Sunday runners at Newmarket and Salisbury, including an entry in the 1,000 Guineas.
Syndicated is a nice horse and has been very natural at home. As I often say, you just never know with them first time out. You’d love them to go and do on the track what they do at home, but there is so much more happening on a course for them first time out (13:15 Newmarket).
Valley Forge has a great chance on the strength of his Melrose win. He’s in good form at home. He’s never been a flashy worker so he’s hard to read in what he does on the gallops. Thankfully, he’s always performed better on the track! He wouldn’t want it rattling quick, but he’s got a chance (13:50 Newmarket).
Spirit Mixer is in a four-runner race at Salisbury that could end up being quite trappy (14:40). The extra two furlongs here should be more to his liking, though. He’s won at Salisbury before, too.
Auria won a Listed race at Sandown last year but lost her way towards the back end of the season. This trip of 9f is ideal for her if the ground isn’t too quick (15:00 Newmarket).
Sandrine has a good chance in the 1,000 Guineas (15:40 Newmarket). She is versatile ground-wise, so it shouldn’t matter too much what the conditions are like for her. I’ve been delighted with the way she’s been working this spring, too. While she is still slightly behind in her coat, her work level has suggested it hasn’t affected her. With her fitness levels in good shape, I’m looking forward to seeing how she’ll run.
Flag High looks like he’ll have a tough task here (15:52 Salisbury). I’d like to think he can improve on what he did last time though.
Ring Fenced ran well on her first start at Newbury. She got going late on in the race and I think this extra two furlongs will suit her. On that run, she’s entitled to have a great chance (17:02 Salisbury).
