Andrew Balding: Chaldean is fit and could be competitive
The Betway ambassador previews his four runners on Wednesday and Thursday, including three at the York Ebor Festival.
Wednesday runners
Chaldean runs in the Acomb (14:25 York). He’s always looked like a nice horse and always does well at home. I liked the way he did it at Newbury last time, showing good improvement from his first run. Most of his opponents are in a similar boat to him, coming off the back of wins in Novice races, so we’ll see where he stands amongst our juveniles after this run. He’s fit and in good health, so I’d like to think he could be competitive.
Morando will need every drop of the forecast rain if he is to run (16:10 York). He’ll need it to be genuinely good ground. He ran very well in the Old Newton Cup at Haydock last time over a trip that is shorter than ideal for him now. He’s been going well at home and has every chance if he has his conditions.
We’re trying a hood on Fehya , who is learning on the job (17:40 Kempton). She broke well last time but was too gassy and didn’t see out the trip, so we’ve dropped her back to 7f. She should go well if the hood and drop in trip help, but she’s one who’ll be winning handicaps in due course.
Thursday runners
We’ve just got one runner on Thursday. Matching Sox won on his debut at Kempton just 10 days ago, but it’s great prize money so it’s worth a shot (14:25 York). The favourite at Kempton really helped us as she hung badly left and opened it up for us, but that’s racing for you, sometimes it goes in your favour. He’s stepping up in trip to 6f and I think that could bring out further improvement.
