Last weekend

We had some ups and downs at York last week but we were delighted with Shine So Bright in the City Of York Stakes. It was a really gusty performance to beat Laurens and it was nice to get one home in front.

I’d said beforehand he would come on for the run, but he’s a very handy horse with a lot of natural speed. He showed a great attitude and I’m sure he can go on to better things.

We’re still debating, but there’s a new race in Sydney in November which is very valuable and has come into the equation.

Bangkok was an excellent second in the Strensall Stakes where he enjoyed the quick ground. There’s another valuable race in Qatar in December which we’ll probably wait for now.

He will stay in training next year and anything between 1m2f and 1m4f on a decent surface will be fine for him. He’ll have lots of options.

Cleonte ran well enough in the Ebor and he’ll probably go for the Doncaster Cup next before either the Cesarewitch or Prix de Cadran depending on how he performs there.

Johnny Drama ran a fine race in the 1m2f handicap and he’s got plenty of options. He’s in the Cambridgeshire which we will certainly think about. I’m sure the strong pace there would suit him.

The Celebration Mile at Goodwood was tactical and it just didn’t pan out for Happy Power. He hit the front sooner that we planned, but Oisin Murphy had to do what he did.

It certainly wasn’t a bad run and I think a better race will suit him. We’ll now look ahead to the big one, the QEII on Champions Day. He’s another who will stay in training next year which is nice.

Shadn ran really well in the Prestige Stakes to finish third. We’re now planning to drop her back in trip and she may well go for the Dick Poole at Salisbury next week.

All in all, the horses ran really well and it was lovely to get one in front.

Sandown on Saturday

We have three at Sandown and first up is Look Around  in the Betway Atalanta Stakes (15:00). Jubiloso is going to be very tough to beat, but our filly deserves a crack at Group Three level.

She won a Listed race over seven furlongs last season and ran really well at Ascot over a mile last time. I hope she’ll run a nice race.

Kameko   won over course and distance on debut last month and takes his chance in the Betway Solario Stakes (15:35). Clive Cox’s Positive brings a very good level of form into the race but Kameko has improved a lot since his debut.

He’s potentially a very nice horse and his work at home has been very good. We’ll see how we get on, I’d say he has a fair each-way chance.

We run Simoon  in the 1m2f handicap (17:20). He has been disappointing on his last couple of starts but he’s had a break and goes well fresh. Sandown should suit him well, so let’s hope he can bounce back to form.

Chester on Saturday

The form of Berkshire Rocco’s fourth at Goodwood has worked out very well and he takes his chance in the opening seven furlong novice (13:35).

He’s a horse that will be better stepped up in trip in time and we’ll definitely get there eventually. I like the way he’s going at home, although Tom Dascombe’s Breathalyze will be tough to beat.

Hero Hero  goes for this handicap (14:10) and is a course and distance winner which is an obvious advantage. He doesn’t have the best draw, though, and it’s going to be hard for him against a field of experienced handicappers. That said, turning tracks suit well and he has each-way claims.

The staying Listed contest (14:45) is a big step up in class for Tribal Craft  but it’s the right kind of race to get some valuable black type. Black type is winning or being placed in an important race, which can have a big impact on a horse’s and, in particular, a mare’s future breeding career.

She ran a solid race at Salisbury last time, I don’t think the quicker ground will bother her and stepping up in trip will suit.

Beverley on Saturday

I think Good Birthday  has a great chance in the opening valuable 1m2f handicap (14:05) and he will love the slightly slower ground. He’s a very nice horse who was third behind Headman in the London Gold Cup earlier in the season.

This is a competitive enough race despite the small field and it could turn out to be a little bit tactical. I like the way he’s going at home, though, and he ran a nice race last time at the July meeting. I’d say he would be our best chance of a winner on Saturday.

Lingfield on Saturday

We’ve been pleased with Imperial Act  this season who goes for the apprentice handicap over a mile (16:20). She’s won three times and has been very consistent. She seems to enjoy this type of race with inexperienced riders and hopefully she’ll go close again.

Baden-Baden on Saturday

We are sending two over to Baden-Baden in Germany on Saturday and we’re looking for black type for Game And Set who runs in the seven furlong Group Three (14:15).

She won well at Newbury a couple of weeks ago and she should run well, although I’d be worried if the ground got too fast.

Shailene won a Listed race in Italy back in June and she must have a solid chance in this Group Two over 1m4f (16:10). The ground won’t be a bother for her.

Brighton on Sunday

There are only three runners in this maiden auction (14:30) and hopefully Spanish Angel will take all the beating. He was disappointing at Chester last time but we think we can put that down to the ground.

Our other runner at Brighton is Herodotus in the seven furlong novice (15:30). Another small field and he’s a horse we like, although he will come on for the run.

Baden-Baden on Sunday

Crossing The Line goes for the mile Group Two (14:55) which is a big step up in class. If she can get in the first three, which hopefully she has every chance of doing, it will increase her value significantly.
