SATURDAY AT ROYAL ASCOT

Likely favourite Pearls And Rubies won well on her debut and will be tough to beat, but it’s the stable’s other runner, CONTENT , that I like in the opener (14:30).

She was an eye-catcher on debut when she finished third and was definitely the horse to take out of the race. Wayne Lordan was on board that day and rides her again on Saturday, and I think she can really put it up to the favourite.

I’m inclined to go with HIGHFIELD PRINCESS in the Jubilee (15:40). She ran well in the King’s Stand on Tuesday and, although I believe the stewards got the decision right, she might have been a touch closer, so could perhaps be marked up on that run. I’m not worried about her backing up so quickly as she’s done it before, and I think she’s every bit effective over 6f as she is over 5f.

In the Hardwicke (16:20), I’m happy to take on the market principals as I don’t believe any of them are solid. I was impressed with DEAUVILLE LEGEND when he won the Great Voltigeur last year before running really well in the Melbourne Cup on soft ground in November. I think he’s smart and, if all eight run, I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t hit the frame.

I’ve had a look at the Wokingham (17:00) and it’s a really difficult puzzle to solve. Betway are paying eight places on the race, so you could find a few you think might hit the frame, but it’s very tough race so I’m happy to swerve it.

I do like CANUTE in the Golden Gates (17:35), though. He won a pretty strong handicap at Navan last time and is on a real upward curve. He caught my eye when he ran the Curragh the time before, too. He won’t be a huge price, but he’s the one to beat.

I think Stratum is worth taking on in the Queen Alexandra (18:10), a race that he’s won the last two years. I’ll be doing so with DAWN RISING who ran well in the Saval Beg at Leopardstown last month and that would have been a good stepping stone for this. He’s proven himself over staying trips over hurdles, so the distance should not be an issue. He’s only run five times on the Flat, so could still be unexposed and won’t mind the conditions, either.

TWO MORE AT DOWN ROYAL

The 14:35 is a hot enough race for its type but I think MOBILISE  is the one to side with. He won really well at Leopardstown last time, showing a good turn of foot after meeting traffic. I don’t think the 8lb rise will stop him.

The other horse on the card that I like is IBRAHIMOVIC  in the 16:25 from Michael Bell’s yard. He’s yet to win but has run into some very smart horses on his last two appearances, including Waipiro who won at Royal Ascot this week. His mark of 83 should give him a good chance.
