With the highest number of declared entries on a single day for over 25 years, Wednesday really is going to seem like the longest day in the commentary box!

MY PROSPERO MY PRINCE OF WALES PICK

The feature race is the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at 16:20 and, even without Desert Crown, it is an absolute belter. The first three home from last year’s Champion Stakes – Bay Bridge, Adayar and My Prospero – all reoppose along with Luxembourg, who narrowly beat Bay Bridge in Ireland last time.

Ryan Moore was able to dictate terms that day on Luxembourg but, with Adayar proven over further, surely he won’t be allowed his own way up front for as long this time around. This should suit both Bay Bridge and MY PROSPERO with personal preference for the latter, who found the mile in the Lockinge too sharp last time and is open to more improvement being a year younger than his main rivals.

William Haggas seldom rushes his smart horses and the yard seem to be going better after a frustrating stop-go start to the season.

KEEP AN EYE ON JOSEPH O’BRIEN

Royal Ascot has not historically been a happy hunting ground for Joseph O’Brien, especially on the training front. Indeed, it was on this very card 12 months ago when a canny Shane Crosse ride saw State of Rest finally give him his first Royal Ascot winner as a trainer with his 44th runner in the Prince of Wales’s. He does, however look to have two live chances on Wednesday.

YERWANTHERE runs in the Kensington Palace Fillies Handicap (15:05) over the round mile. She has been very lightly raced through her career – this being only her fourth racecourse start – but looked very unlucky not to finish closer when wrong at the weights in a Listed race at Naas last time. Had she not met trouble in running then she would have been right alongside horses rated over 100, so a mark here of just 93 looks very workable.

JUMBLY changed hands for a cool £1.25m after winning the Valiant Stakes here last July. That was a Group 3 contest and connections will be keen to try and gain success at an even higher level to further enhance her paddock status and pedigree page. Her first start for the yard yielded a creditable second in a Group 2 having been a bit keen early. Hopefully with the freshness out of her she can justify favouritism in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes (15:40) and give Joseph an afternoon to remember rather than adding to the ones to forget.

ELSEWHERE ON THE CARD

Away from the selections, the pair of 2YO races have attracted huge fields and are very difficult to price up with any degree of confidence. Beautiful Diamond, who runs in the Queen Mary opener (14:30) impressed me at Nottingham and Karl Burke has a good record in juvenile races at the track.

In the Royal Hunt Cup (17:00), the two obvious ones, Perotto and Astro King, have both been well found in the market, especially with Perotto being drawn very much on one wing.

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

Our away-day selection on Wednesday is PERSUER  (13:50, Hamilton). Keith Dalgleish does well with horses that switch to his yard and this horse changed hands cheaply late last year.

As Keith is about to hand in his licence, she, along with many from the yard, is entered in the July sale so this represents an obvious chance to try and improve her value prior to then.

She hasn’t run on the Flat for a considerable time but, is off a historically low mark with the stable change a plus, and a likely strong gallop potentially suiting her hold-up style.

YERWANTHERE (15:05, Royal Ascot)

JUMBLY (15:40, Royal Ascot)

MY PROSPERO (16:20, Royal Ascot)
