The fourth and final day of the prestigious St Leger Festival and one that features the big race and the oldest classic.

Here are my best bets for Saturday on Town Moor...

1.50 – Portland Handicap

Horses aged four and five have dominated this race over the last decade, with nine wins from 10.

During that time there have been only two winning favourites in this contest, with seven winners returning at prices bigger than 10/1.

So we shouldn’t be frightened of fancying an outsider.

The draw is all-important and we can eliminate horses with single-figure stalls, since they’ve only produced one winner in 10 years.

With all those factors taken into account we are left with a shortlist that contains Michael Appleby’s HAKAM .

He’s wearing cheekpieces for the first time here and also has the assistance of a valuable 3lbs claimer Lewis Edmunds.

He can cope with this slight drop in trip and feature at the finish with four places paid each-way.

2.25 – Park Stakes (Group 2)

Breton Rock was a narrow winner of this race last year, but his task this year looks tougher.

Hopefully eight horses stay in the race for each-way purposes and investments in SPIRIT OF VALOUR  and SIR DANCEALOT  should at least produce a decent place return.

Both are three years of age and can join the two winners from that age category in the last four years to make it three in five.

3.00 – Champagne Stakes (Group 2)

HEY GAMAN  is far more exposed than the other juveniles in this race, but it’s no disgrace to have his kind of recent form already in the book.

He’s fresh after a four-week break and can land the hat-trick here.

3.35 – St Leger Stakes (Group 1)

STRADIVARIUS  has been profitable to follow this season and can continue to reward his followers by landing the big one here.

His win in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot bodes well for his performance in this classic race – even though Andrea Atzeni jumps ship for the ride on the well-fancied Defoe  .

4.10 – Nursery Handicap

RHOSNEIGR  is seeking a hat-trick after wins at Haydock and Ffos Las recently.

He’s up 6lbs here but has shown battling qualities in recent weeks and will take a lot of beating here.

4.45 – Mile Handicap

JUST HISS  and YOU’RE FIRED  are my two against the field in this competitive handicap.

The former can recover from being brought down last time at Ripon, while the latter was a non-runner in a Group 3 at Haydock last week.

This will be obviously easier despite carrying top weight.

5.55 – 1m 4f Handicap

TAWDEEA  is coming down the weights nicely and can land a belated first success of the season at a track where he ran with credit in the November Handicap on his first visit back in 2016.
