14.15 ASCOT

TOP PICK: COUNT CALABASH

Second choice: Thundering Blue

COUNT CALABASH looks more than capable of defying a rise in the weights after a facile success at Kempton last time out. This is the furthest he has raced, but he has always coped with a step up in distance well over the course of his career. A feature of his racing is that he is tough and he’ll need to be in this contest as the Ascot straight seems to last for a little bit longer than most jockeys realise. He was actually headed at Kempton in April and still came back to win, a quality rare in a thoroughbred. His jockey Charles Bishop is in good form with a 30% strike rate over the last fortnight.

14.30 LINGFIELD

TOP PICK: THRAVE

Second choice: Kew Gardens

Rarely a solid trial for the Derby, but what’s in a name?

This is still a race showcasing classy three-year-olds from some top stables.

Henry Candy’s THRAVE looks to have a great chance based on his juvenile form.

He can beat the more exposed favourite Kew Gardens from the Aidan O’Brien stable.

15.10 HAYDOCK

TOP PICK: SILVER STREAK

Second choice: Capitaine

Over the hurdles at Haydock, and a group of horses that have all been seen during the last three months, barring one.

Hassle is returning from an absence of over a year and a half.

The yard is on form and, on his best runs, he cannot be discounted if fit.

I prefer SILVER STREAK, though. Evan Williams’ runner has a nice, low weight and has been crying out for this drier ground.

16.00 ASCOT

TOP PICK: MASHAM STAR

Second choice: Sabador

If you’ve got this far, well done.

But the really hard work is just beginning, with a cavalry charge of nearly 30 runners down Ascot’s straight mile that will have its fair share of fortunate breaks and hard-luck stories.

For what appears such a random race, a few trends do hold firm.

Horses weighted below nine stone and aged four have good records, with only a couple of winners falling outside each of those brackets in the last few years.

Higher draws have been favoured in the last decade, with only three winners coming from single-figure stalls in that period.

MASHAM STAR hails from the in-form Mark Johnston stable, who have had 12 winners in the last two weeks.

The horse ticks all the boxes and looks a tad overpriced based on his recent turf form. If he bounces back to anything like his best he can shock here.

16.00 Ascot: Masham Star
