13:50 CHELTENHAM

I’m looking forward to seeing Count Meribel 9/1 run in this Grade 3 chase after he missed an engagement at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.

He ran well at that course in a much better race in November, having previously chased home Lostintranslation at Carlisle.

He won a Novice Chase here last term and was second in a Grade 2 Hurdle as a novice, so there are no reservations about him.

I’m convinced he can perform on any ground and will go close under Mark Grant.

The Cotswold Chase was once known as a good trial for the Gold Cup, but recent results suggest otherwise.

That would be a major doubt for those backing Santini 6/4 at the Festival, but shouldn’t deter them from backing him here.

While he’s due to go off as favourite, he’s a strapping chaser and an extended three miles around Cheltenham is just what he needs.

He’s still very lightly-raced, but oozes class, despite his workmanlike reappearance at Sandown in November, when he made hard work of beating Now McGinty.

He won here as a novice and finished as a staying-on third in the Albert Bartlett the same year. He should win this if he’s going to even run in the Gold Cup.

15:15 DONCASTER

The two on my radar for this race are Burbank, who won very well on Betway Challow Hurdle Day at Newbury, and Cobra De Mai, who is handicapped to go close.

Burbank 8/1 has long been on my radar. He is very talented but seems to want to do things his own way. He jumps well and stays very well.

It would be no surprise to see him go close in this before a tilt at the Ultima at the Festival, which his trainer won last year.

Cobra De Mai 7/1 looked on the way back to form last time out at Kempton Park and can give his young rider a great spin.

16:10 CHELTENHAM

It is interesting that trainer Ben Pauling is pitching We Run The Night SP into a Cheltenham handicap on his first start.

He is very well-handicapped off 131.

Ainchea SP is having his second run after a long lay-off, and could well be in the reckoning if he repeats the form he showed in his recent run at Sandown Park and has retained some of the ability he showed as a novice a couple of years ago.

John Constable SP is likely to be a huge price. His falling mark and promising form mean that he can give his rider, Isobel Williams, a good run around Prestbury Park.
