14:00 CHELTENHAM: BRAQUER D'OR

There's something for everyone in this Saturday’s 4 To Win, and we’ll need expertise across both codes in order to land the big prize. 

We start over fences at Cheltenham with an ultra-competitive early-season handicap.

J. P. McManus has three entries, two with Jonjo O’Neill and one with Phillip Hobbs.

It’s the Hobbs horse, For Good Measure, who looks to have the best chance. He was a well-beaten third in a four-runner Grade 2 at Kempton last time out but looks well treated on his hurdle form. Hobbs has also won this race an incredible five times over the last decade, including three consecutive victories with Balthazar King.

An interesting contender is BRAQUEUR D’OR from the Paul Nicholls stable. He’s had a wind op since a poor run at Ayr in April.

On his best form – fourth in the race that used to be the Hennessy – he might be worth chancing on this comeback run.

14:50 NEWBURY: CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD

We head off to Berkshire for a flat race over 7f for juveniles.

This Group 3 has thrown up some interesting results in the past, with no winning favourite in the last 10 years, although four second-favourites have won in that time.

I rarely fancy a horse as strongly as I do CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD.

Mick Channon’s colt was incredibly impressive on debut at Goodwood with a time that, even with a bit of cut in the ground, compares favourably with form shown by the top two-year-olds already this season.

The competition in this race have all run at least twice and haven’t shown anything like the kind of form that this selection has, so even the minimal improvement that usually comes from horses this age between their first and second start should see him win this comfortably.

15:45 CHELTENHAM: PERFECT MAN

This handicap hurdle is usually won by a horse within the first five runners in the betting market.

The weight carried by the last 10 winners has been under 11st on eight occasions. The other two times they were both carrying less than 11st 5lb.

All the winners in that period were aged between five and nine.

I’ll take a chance on PERFECT MAN here.

He needs to step up on his current form, but does look capable and this three-mile trip on good ground looks ideal. He ticks most of the recent trend boxes.

16:05 DONCASTER: MAGNA GRECIA

From jumping in Gloucestershire to the other extreme of juvenile flat horses in one of the biggest races of the season.

Contenders for this race should be contesting the classics next season, so it’s a race to pay close attention to.

Seven of the last 10 runnings have been won by the favourite, although we did have a 33/1 winner in 2015 with Marcel.

Aidan O’Brien has won four of the races in that period including Saxon Warrior’s victory last year. The stable have three entries this year including likely favourite MAGNA GRECIA.

If you’ve got this far in 4 To Win, then I think it’s best to play safe with a horse who looks to have everything in his favour.
