With £50,000 up for grabs on day one of Cheltenham Festival, here are Chad Yeomans' best horse racing tips to get you started.

14:50 ULTIMA HANDICAP

The Ultima Handicap is a Grade 3 chase over 3m1f.

Vinndication  has been the long-time antepost favourite for the race following his success in a good handicap at Ascot in November – a race that has thrown up plenty of winners since. He’s only been beaten in two of his nine career races and does look to have a serious amount of potential, although he does have to shoulder top weight here.

No Comment  runs in this as opposed to the Kim Muir on Thursday and has obviously been campaigned for a crack at this contest by his shrewd connections.

Big River  ran on strongly in this race last year to finish fourth and should be there or thereabouts again at the business end of the race, especially off just a 1lb higher mark.

15:30 CHAMPION HURDLE

The Champion Hurdle is the most wide-open of all the Championship races this year.

On official ratings, they do look a bit below the usual standard, which leads me to thinking it will be won by a potential improver.

I’m fairly keen on Coeur Sublime  as I’m sure we haven’t seen the best of him yet. He was a big raw horse last season and looked the winner in the Triumph Hurdle from a long way out until he was collared by Pentland Hills’ wet sail in the final 200 yards.

He’s stronger this year and he caught my eye last time in the Matheson Hurdle in Ireland, despite the fact he made a noise and has had a breathing operation as a result.

Ciloas Emery  has been supplemented for this race and rerouted from his original plan of the Betway Champion Chase, which suggests his connections think he’s good enough.

16:50 NOVICES' HANDICAP CHASE

The Northern Trust Handicap looks as competitive as ever. You could throw plenty of darts at the race and still not find the bull.

I do think Galvin  will be competitive as he’s been laid out for this race. After watching his races back recently, he did go very well in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle last year, proving he acts on this undulating track. He’s trained by Gordon Elliott and is to be ridden by the master, Davy Russell.

Beakstown  has ran three times over fences this season and in some very good races at that. I expect him to go very close, too.

17:30 NATIONAL HUNT CHASE

It’s always worth looking at the jockey bookings in the National Hunt Chase as a top jockey is worth their weight in gold in a race that is confined to amateurs.

Carefully Selected  will be a very popular selection for trainer Willie Mullins who has his son – and top amateur – Patrick Mullins riding. He has won all three of his starts over fences and could end up being a class apart.

Newtide  won the Grade 2 Towton Novices’ Chase in February and could have enough class to chase him home.
