13.50 CHESTER

TOP PICK: LIHOU 

Second choice: Arthur's Spirit 

Mark Johnston won this race in 2014 and 2015, and is aiming to make it three wins in five seasons with the likely favourite No Lippy.

She has an incredible chance of success considering the bare facts of her win at Doncaster on debut, but there is a real concern that she hung right inside the final furlong that day.

If there’s one course in the country where you couldn’t get away with doing that, it’s Chester, so we're going to swerve her at a short price.

Favourites also have a bad record in the race, with just two wins in the last decade.

Arthur’s Spirit is being written off because of his poor draw out in stall 10, but his performance when winning last time out at Kempton would put him right in the picture here if he can overcome that wide berth.

LIHOU, drawn in stall five, could back up his Kempton win where he stayed on nicely towards the end of the race.

15.00 CHESTER

TOP PICK: LOOKS A MILLION

Second choice: Showmethedough

This is another race over the minimum trip at Chester where the draw will play a big part.

The history of this race shows only two horses drawn higher than stall four have won this in the last decade.

LOOKS A MILLION was a bit unlucky on her seasonal reappearance when hampered in a Listed race at Bath.

Some very good fillies were in front of her that day, including weekend Newmarket winner Mabs Cross and Miss Gallagher, who brought up a Listed double at Naas last time out.

Fit from that, back in her own age group and with a competitive weight, she should go well here.

Spoof and Showmethedough may give her the most to do.

15.10 KELSO

TOP PICK: SHEPHERD'S BIGHT

Second choice: Graystown

Summer jumps racing is often tough to call, particularly close handicaps like this one, and you’d have to say that it’s hard to put a line through any of the 11 runners here.

No horse older than eight has won this in the last 10 years.

For that reason, we can eliminate the three oldest horses, including one towards the head of the market, Witness.

SHEPHERD’S BIGHT has been off for 115 days and that might be a good thing at this time of the season.

He seems unexposed in this sphere and could go well based on a reasonable run at Carlisle just over a year ago.

15.35 CHESTER

TOP PICK: PROSCHEMA

Second choice: Dee Ex Bee

Aidan O’Brien has won the last five renewals of the Chester Vase, taking his tally to seven wins in the last decade.

His last five winners were favourites for the race, ranging from 4/11 to 3/1 in their SP.

O’Brien has three entries this year, with Hunting Horn looking to be his main contender based on the market and the booking of jockey Ryan Moore.

There are 10 runners scheduled to go to post, the highest number in this race for well over 10 years.

That could provide a bit of competition to the market leader both in ability and luck playing a part at this narrow track with an extremely short straight.

PROSCHEMA is seeking a hat-trick for the local stable of Tom Dascombe. He should be doing his best work towards the end of the race and may give the Irish raiders a shock.
