2.05 GOODWOOD

TOP PICK: WHAT A HOME

Second choice: Titi Makfi

This 1m4f Listed contest for female horses looks wide open, and the history of the race has a fair spread of winning SPs. The soft going will actually make the final few furlongs of the race a real test as they straighten out for home.

Leading contender Architecture should handle the conditions but had appalling run at Newbury back in October. She also has a poor record when returning from a break, and this time it’s 189 days.

Likely favourite Mori has been off for even longer, and she’s been beaten all three times stepping up to this distance.

WHAT A HOME has been a convincing winner twice at this distance and is proven on a soft surface. She tends to thrive at the end of her races and will relish a battle.

2.40 GOODWOOD

TOP PICK: DONNCHA

Second choice: Pastoral Player

Here we have a tough 7f handicap, but the form of most of the field is well exposed.

Mister Music has had an incredible start to the year at Southwell, where he has won four races, stepping up in class each time. He’s twice a winner at Goodwood over longer trips earlier in his career.

Right Action is another horse on a roll and seeks a hat-trick here after wins at Doncaster and Catterick. Only three of the fifteen intended runners have failed to win at the trip.

Pastoral Player is old enough to be going to secondary school, but still had decent figures last year. He’s not a solid proposition for this competition but for punting purposes could appeal each-way at around 25/1.

DONNCHA is a previous course and distance winner who is fit from outings in stronger races and this should suit.

2.55 NEWMARKET

TOP PICK: KHALIDI

Second choice: Defoe

I see we’ve tried to make it easy for entrants with the addition of this Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes, or more likely a number of potential runners were put off by the appearance of Roger Varian’s Defoe.

It’s going to be tempting to stick him in at such a short price, but I’ll try for an alternative to the odds-on favourite.

KHALIDI is still finding his feet at the Clive Cox stable since a switch from John Gosden’s, but he’s got a chance of producing a shock in this small field on his best form.

3.35 NEWMARKET

TOP PICK: EXPERT EYE -

Second choice: Gustav Klimt -

This is the first Classic of the flat turf season in Britain, but it’s very likely that the prize will be heading to Ireland for the fifth time this decade.

Aidan O’Brien has the two colts that are likely to be first and second in the betting: Gustav Klimt and the unbeaten Saxon Warrior.

Shocks can happen in this race and we’ve seen horses win this at 11/1, 14/1, 33/1 and 40/1 in the last ten years. There have also been four winning favourites in that time.

EXPERT EYE is a horse that seems to be crying out for a longer trip, he can also be forgiven for a run at Newmarket back in October when he was found to be lame. With that in mind, he ran incredibly well on seasonal reappearance at Newbury a couple of weeks ago. If fit and back to his best he’s a cracking selection to round it off.
