TOP PICK: MASTER THE WORLD

Second choice: Here Comes When  

This Group 3 mile contest has only been won by the favourite three times in the last 10 years. During that period, no horse older than six has won the race.

Horses aged three and four account for eight of the last 10 winners but, despite those age stats, the claims of eight-year-old Here Comes When and seven-year-old MASTER THE WORLD are compelling.

The latter is better-suited to an all-weather surface, but this soft ground on Haydock’s straight track may also play to his strengths.

He won a Class 2 race at Goodwood last year in similar conditions and also won at this level this year when awarded the Betway Winter Derby.

14:45 ASCOT

TOP PICK: RAISING SAND

Second choice: Swift Approval

This race - with double-figure field and prices starting around 7/1 - is extremely tough to call.

In fact, to paraphrase a gag from Only Fools and Horses: “Who sponsors the 2.45 at Ascot?” “It’s Cunard.” “I know it is, but who sponsors it?" (I’m here most weeks!).

The draw of recent winners is inconclusive in terms of favouring a certain side.

There hasn’t been a winning favourite of the race in the previous seven years and the average winning SP has been just over 11/1.

RAISING SAND was a narrowly beaten fourth in this race last year and didn’t have the best of starts. If he can get away on level terms and keep with the pack then he’s a very interesting runner.

15:55 ASCOT

TOP PICK: GHOSTWATCH

Second choice: First Eleven

This is an open-looking handicap for horses aged three, featuring horses that have won plenty of races over the course of this season.

GHOSTWATCH from the Charlie Appleby stable will be dropping back in distance here, but looks more than capable of following up his win from York last time out, which, incidentally, was his first run since being gelded.

16:15 HAYDOCK

TOP PICK: JAMES GARFIELD

Second choice: Gustav Klimt

The last two Sprint Cup favourites have been triumphant, and the short-priced Harry Angel will be trying to follow up on last season’s win and make it a hat-trick for the market leaders in this race in the process.

But, for the purposes of this competition, it’s best to look elsewhere and take a chance on something at a bigger price.

Half the winners of this race over the last decade returned at a double-figure price, with horses aged three successful in the last four renewals.
