13.50 CHESTER
TOP PICK: BOSSIPOP
Second choice: Reflektor
The Chester card opens with a five-furlong handicap with double-figure entries.
The importance of a low draw was highlighted in this race last year when El Astronaute made all from stall one. He tries to land consecutive wins here but from a far trickier stall nine.
It’s another horse from last year’s race that I’m interested in.
BOSSIPOP was fifth at 50/1 from the widest draw of nine runners last season, beaten by just under five lengths staying on.
Off a slightly lower weight this year and from a more favourable stall six, he could be a shock winner.
He may be better over six furlongs, but he has won at Chester before and that’s important at such a quirky venue.
14.25 CHESTER
TOP PICK: RASTRELLI
Second choice: Finniston Farm
RASTRELLI was a very eye-catching winner at Newbury three weeks ago when winning a conditions race in fine style.
He has some great form from last season and seems to handle this 1m 2f distance very well.
His trainer, Charlie Appleby, and jockey, William Buick are also both in outstanding form.
15.00 CHESTER
TOP PICK: SIMPSON
Second choice: Dragons Tail
This is a competitive three-year-old handicap over a distance just shy of a mile round the ‘Roodee’.
The stuck-record warning of a low draw being important will apply all week.
Consequently, Nobleman’s Nest would have made lots of appeal if he wasn’t drawn in the car park in stall 12 of 13.
SIMPSON can be excused a relatively poor run on seasonal reappearance at Epsom a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that, his form looked as though a step up to 1m 2f would suit.
He has stall one here and could get an easy lead and make a mockery of double-figure price quotes.
15.35 CHESTER
TOP PICK: IDAHO
Second choice: Dylan Mouth
The Ormonde Stakes is the feature race of the day, with IDAHO aiming to give trainer Aidan O’Brien his first win in the race since 2012.
Two favourites from the stable have been beaten at prices of 2/1 and 6/5 in the last five years. Idaho will be priced roughly in the middle of that range.
It’s hard to oppose him against a field that have plenty of question marks surrounding them.
He looks the most solid selection of the day.
