TOP PICK: MUNTADAB

Second choice: Baraweez

A day littered with competitive handicaps gets underway on the ‘Roodee’ with this contest over a distance just shy of a mile.

MUNTADAB was too bad to be true when last seen at the back end of last season. That defeat at Doncaster looked like a long season had taken its toll, having run 13 times between April and November in 2017.

Notably, he ran very well when fresh at the start of that campaign, with a hat-trick of runner-up finishes in decent races.

He performed reasonably well on his only previous visit to Chester, recovering from being hampered to be involved at the finish back in September 2016, and everything looks in place for him to run well here.

14.25 CHESTER

TOP PICK: WAR DECREE

Second choice: Eminent

The Huxley Stakes should go to the favourite Eminent, who looks a class above his opponents here.

But, outside of the obvious, I think a good case can be made for Aidan O’Brien’s WAR DECREE.

After his seasonal reappearance, he wouldn’t have to find much to be danger to the market leader.

Particularly if Martyn Meade’s runner needs the outing after 244 days away from the track.

15.00 CHESTER

TOP PICK: PIVOINE

Second choice: Titi Makfi

Back to tough handicaps, and one that takes a lot of working out.

At the time of writing, only 10 betting points separate all but the rank outsider in the field - and even he, Speed Company, has a squeak on best form.

Andrew Balding’s PIVOINE looks very well-handicapped on his form from last season when taking two mid-level races for his previous trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

His wins on the All-Weather are a bonus owing to Chester’s similar tight turns.

We need to forgive his reappearance run at Newbury, but he could bounce back here.

15.35 CHESTER

TOP PICK: FUN MAC

Second choice: Grandee

The prestigious Chester Cup is a minefield for punters as 17 scheduled runners take on the tight turns for just over two laps.

Three horses have won from draws higher than five in the last 10 years, while the other seven were drawn in five or under.

Notably, the middle draws have suffered, possibly due to the concertina effect as they leave the stalls.

FUN MAC really catches my eye from those with lower draws.

He was a close third from an arguably worse draw last year, and hung a little left in the home straight.

He’s around the optimum age to win the race and a very nice price, too.
