The Grade 3 Chase sees a field of 12 go to post and there will plenty of focus on ante-post favourite Kalashnikov , who will be bidding to win this competitive race off top weight, a feat only completed last year by Aso.
Mister Whitaker would be of serious interest had he had a prep run prior to this, but this is his seasonal reappearance, and a few may just be a bit fitter.
It’s worth noting that Elle-Marie Holden is bringing Ex Patriot over for this contest and I do think he’ll run into a place at the very least.
He’s a strong travelled horse who finished fourth in the Triumph Hurdle a couple of years ago, so is clearly talented on his day. He has an official rating of 147 and that could look generous come 14:05.
14:15 MUSSELBURGH
The Betway Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle is the feature race on the fantastic card at Musselburgh.
Ashington is not likely to go off favourite as he’s currently 2-3 since he has gone hurdling and has won his last two races by a combined total of 20 lengths.
He could still be improving and could be hard to beat.
Last year’s winner Normal Norman had a lovely prep run on the AW recently, and this race is undoubtedly his big target. He’s a strong traveller and it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see him right up there coming to the last.

The Pertemps Qualifiers are always tough as you only need to finish in the first six to qualify for the final at the Festival, but favourite Skandiburg is on such a good mark that I don’t think a win will hike him up too much in the handicap.
I spoke with Olly Murphy recently and he liked this horse, and I think he’d have been very happy to let Skandiburg skip this race and go straight to Cheltenham in March.
At the bottom of the handicap, Constantine Bay has got some very strong form in the book from his days with Nicky Henderson and he could be well handicapped on the best of that form.
His trainer Brian Ellison has a good record at Cheltenham and has secured the services of Jack Tudor, a talented rider who is very good value for his seven-pounds claim.
14:50 MUSSELBURGH
The final 4 To Win race is the Betway Heed Your Hunch Handicap. Pat’s Pearl looks to have been trained for this race by his very shrewd handler and has some decent Irish form in the book, so it would be no surprise to see him go close on his first start of the season.
I also think it’s worth siding with Lostock Hall , who will relish the quicker conditions he’ll face here as opposed to some of the real softer ground conditions he simply doesn’t act on. He’s on a good enough mark for this race and can run well in the hands of Alain Crawley.
