14.35 NEWBURY

TOP PICK: GAVOTA

Second choice: Tajaanus

Here we have another set of fillies out to show their classic credentials following midweek races at Newmarket where the Guineas picture changed.

This race hasn't produced a 1000 Guineas winner since 1999, though, so these might be fillies just below the top level.

Ryan Moore’s mount GAVOTA is a justifiable favourite, and should get her head in front here having been narrowly beaten in her last two starts as a two-year-old.

Those looked hot juvenile races at Newmarket and, as I say, she wasn’t beaten far.

This could be just the right set of opposition that enables her to get in the winners’ enclosure again.

14.35 Newbury: Gavota

14.55 AYR

TOP PICK: VERDANA BLUE

Second choice: Claimantakinforgan

The Scottish Champion Hurdle has a number of horses that we saw at Cheltenham a few weeks ago.

VERDANA BLUE was a horse on my radar leading in to the Festival but Nicky Henderson decided she wasn’t going to take part at Prestbury Park.

She’s nicely fresh and is ultimately capable of landing this race on her best form.

The limited handicap conditions has her in at a reasonable weight.

The good ground is ideal for her and it will be great for her supporters and connections if she could bounce back here against some highly talented male horses.

14.55 Ayr: Verdana Blue

15.45 NEWBURY

TOP PICK: HUMBERT

Second choice: Afaak

There are 25 runners scheduled to go to post in this third leg, with prices around 7/1 the field.

We need to use a few angles to narrow down the selections.

The last 10 winners of this race were six or younger, though that only eliminates three of the horses set to take part.

No winner in that period carried more than 9st 7lb, so three more horses can be discarded using that stat.

HUMBERT has been incredibly consistent for Hugo Palmer and has the assistance of Josephine Gordon.

He’s fit from a winter campaign and has the same profile as recent winners of this race.

15.45 Newbury: Humbert

16.05 AYR

TOP PICK: COGRY

Second choice: The Young Master

A week after the main event at Aintree, this weekend we have the Scottish Grand National at Ayr.

National races are wide open but, as we saw in Liverpool last week, sometimes horses towards the top of the market win.

Vicente aims for an incredible third consecutive win in the race. He broke the recent weight trends last year when carrying 11st 10lb home in good ground.

He has the same ground conditions this time but has 3lb taken off his back. That makes him a worthy favourite at around 8/1 having won the last two renewals at 14/1 and 9/1.

COGRY was second in this last year and is fresh from a run at Cheltenham over an inadequate distance. He is a tentative selection in a tough race.
