14:50 CHEPSTOW
The Welsh National will no doubt be a dour test as 17 line up for the marathon staying trip on soft ground.
Last year’s winner Elegant Escape lines up again, though he’s 13lb higher in the handicap this time round.
Yala Enki , third last year, also runs in this year’s renewal off the same mark. This is just his second outing under Paul Nicholls since moving from Venetia Williams’ yard in the summer.
He ran very well – better than the bare form suggests – in the Ladbrokes Trophy last time out.
This race has no doubt been the target for him all year and, under Bryony Frost, he can go two better than in 2018.
15:05 KEMPTON
The 3m Handicap Chase is very competitive and will no doubt see Belami Des Pictons go off as favourite for the in-form Venetia Williams yard.
He could end up being a class apart but he does have top weight to shoulder and it’s going to be very testing conditions, with rain falling all throughout Boxing Day.
Alternatively, Harry Fry saddles Just A Sting who hasn’t been seen since early November when he ran a cracker in the Badger Beers Chase at Wincanton behind Give Me A Copper.
This horse doesn’t take the most racing, so he’ll have been freshened up for a race in which he was third last year off a 3lb higher mark.
15:25 CHEPSTOW
The Novices’ Handicap chase is the penultimate race on the card at Chepstow which has a field of six going to post.
Richard Johnson rides Samburu Shujaa on his debut over fences and it’s hard to know how he could be treated off 135, but his hurdles form suggests that he could be better than that mark.
He ran very well on his seasonal comeback over hurdles at Newbury in November and, on his final start last season, he was mid-division in the Pertempts Final at Cheltenham.
He could be handily-placed on his chase debut here.
15:35 KEMPTON
The closing race at Kempton Park is the Handicap Hurdle, which has last year’s winner Eddiemaurice in the field again.
This is his ‘Gold Cup’ every year and he will have been trained for this race so you can be sure he’ll be bang there coming to the last.
I do, however, think this is much tougher the last two renewals that he’s run in, especially against the Nicky Henderson-trained Elusive Belle , who was a very good third behind Epatante at Newbury last time out.
She’ll come out leaps and bounds for that run and should be very tough to pass under Sam Waley-Cohen, who still claims a very valuable 3lb.
