2.00 EPSOM

TOP PICK: TRUE BELIEF 

Second choice: Cotubanama 

There are some speedy juveniles in this line up from all of the likely stables. The last seven winners of this race were trained by stables that have at least one entry in this 2018 field.

The quirky Epsom track can kill a lot of chances in this race (and plenty of others over the weekend), so handling the undulations will have to be taken on trust. There is no course form on offer.

Favourites have a reasonable record in the last decade, with three clear favourites successful and two that were joined at the head of the market.

Mark Johnston and Silvestre De Sousa have teamed up twice in the last seven years to win this race and their Marie’s Diamond is the likely market leader. He’ll handle the going based on his debut win at Leicester.

I like Godolphin’s TRUE BELIEF  , who was slightly hampered on debut at York, running a respectable race. He’d only need to improve a minuscule amount from there to land this for the Charlie Appleby stable.

2.35 EPSOM

TOP PICK: KING'S PAVILION

Second choice: Masham Star 

There is a select but ultra-competitive field for this handicap over an extended mile. It’s around 4/1 the field with no horse bigger than 16/1 at the time of writing – suggesting all nine scheduled runners are not without a chance.

Winners of this race are usually aged four or five, with that bracket responsible for nine of the last 10 winners. That helps us narrow the field down slightly.

As with all of the races at the Surrey track, the unsettled weather, soft going and quirky bends and dips cry out for some course form.

KING’S PAVILION  ticks the box, having won at the track with a little bit of give in the going a couple of years ago. He’s run respectably on soft since then and should be capable of being there at the finish.

4.30 EPSOM

TOP PICK: WILD ILLUSION

Second choice: I Can Fly

The Oaks – the fillies classic. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this race three of the last six years and is responsible for five of the runners in the 2018 field of nine.

Godolphin’s WILD ILLUSION can beat them all, though. She’s going to handle the surface and her breeding gives her every hope of staying on at the finish.

She’s a worthy favourite and I’m going to keep it simple.

5.50 EPSOM

TOP PICK: RIPP ORF

Second choice: Clubbable

This 7f handicap was won well last year by Juanito Chico but the four-year-old hasn’t tasted success since.

David Elsworth’s RIPP ORF is certainly the form horse coming into the race (2221-2212), including a big win in the Victoria Cup.

He made the step up to 1m at Newbury two weeks ago, but could only manage second.

Dropping back to 7f today looks to be a wise decision, and he should be right in the mix come the finish.
