Top pick: Threat | Second choice: Guildsman

The first two-year-old race of the Royal meeting is the Coventry Stakes and I'm very confident on the chances of THREAT, who is trained by Richard Hannon.

The son of Footstepsinthesand won his only start at Newmarket's Guineas meeting and was well-fancied despite going off at 10/1 in a four-runner maiden. He travelled, quickened and stayed on well to beat a 2/5 shot from Saeed Bin Suroors' yard that had the benefit of a previous run.

He's been kept back for this race by a yard who have had some serious two-year-olds over the years. They clearly think this horse is right up there with them and will take all the beating.

Archie Watson's record with juveniles this season has been outstanding and his recent Goodwood winner, Guildsman, who posted a fantastic time on his debut, can be the horse to chase him home.

Top pick: Sergei Prokofiev | Second choice: Fairyland

The King's Stand Stakes looks to be one of the most fascinating contests of the week, with a market spearheaded by Battaash and last year's winner, Blue Point, the young and very fast Mabs Cross and a host of international opposition.

However, my preference is for the Aidan O'Brien trained three-year-old, SERGEI PROKOFIEV, whose performance in the Cornwallis at Newmarket sticks in my mind as proof that this horse is all speed and that 5f is his optimum trip.

He won on his seasonal debut at Navan when he would have needed the run and was the eyecatcher at Newmarket in the Palace House Stakes, when he started slowly but started to fly at the end of the race only to be denied by 2½ lengths.

The yard's other runner is the filly, Fairyland, who is hugely interesting based on the fact she has run in the English and Irish 1000 Guineas in her only two starts this season, both of which are over a mile.

She finished third at Royal Ascot last year but improved to win her next two starts including the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes, and, if O'Brien's decision to drop her in trip pays off, she could well get among the first four places on offer with Betway.

Top pick: Coeur De Lion | Second choice: Time to Study

The penultimate race on day one is t,he Ascot Stakes, run over 2m4f, which has been dominated by National Hunt trainers in recent years.

Willie Mullins trained the 1-3-4-5 in this race last year has the current favourite Buildmeupbuttercup, who is the chosen ride of Ryan Moore. Interestingly, this is his only runner this year, compared to the five he had 12 months ago, which could be a sign this horse is very well-handicapped and he doesn't think he needs to throw any more darts.

Despite that, I have a liking for the Alan King-trained COEUR DE LION, whose campaign looks to have been based around this race after coming sixth last year. The Pour Moi gelding has had two runs this season, including a victory at Chester last time out, and is a horse who will appreciate any cut in the ground.

The second choice is for the Ian Williams-trained outsider, Time To Study, who looks to be extremely well-handicapped on his old form when trained by Mark Johnston. He was second in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in 2018 off 105 and is currently on a mark of 96, which I think he’ll exploit here.

There are excuses for his two runs this season. The first was over a trip that was one mile too short and the ground for the second at Chester was virtually unraceable.

I expect him to be spot on for this assignment. He may not win, but he looks a solid each-way bet with Betway paying five places.

Top pick: First Nation | Second choice: Willie John

The Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket's Craven meeting couldn't have worked out better for its entrants, with two of the runners going on to win Group 1s, one winning a Group 2, and others winning a Group 3, a Listed race and a handicap. 

That draws attention to FIRST NATION, finished fifth in that race but wasn't given a hard time and stayed on steadily while looking the most eye-catching.

He hasn't been seen since and the chosen mount of James Doyle looks to have been kept for this contest.

He would appreciate a strongly-run race and, with at least three confirmed front runners entered, he should be able to travel off a quick pace before coming into contention late, as we know he stays further than this trip. 

He is a double-figure price at the time of writing and it's well worth taking advantage of Betway's enhanced place offer by backing him to finish in the top four.

OTHER TUESDAY TIPS

HAZAPOUR  has gone under the radar in the week leading up to this meeting although, since the booking of Frankie Dettori, he has been well-supported in the market

This is trainer Dermot Weld's only runner at Ascot this week, and he is notorious for only sending horses to England when he thinks they have a real chance.

Last year's fifth in the Derby is a perfect two from two when running over a mile and, with the division looking very open, this recent Group 3 winner could be the first of many flying dismounts for Frankie this week.
