The Ballymore Leamington Novices’ Hurdle is often a key trial for the Ballymore Hurdle at Cheltenham and this year a field of six have been declared.

Likely favourite Shan Blue  has always been highly-touted by the Dan Skelton yard and has run well in three starts this season.

In his first start he was narrowly beaten at Wetherby by Redford Road, before he fell at Newbury when moving up well.

Whilst this is a step up in grade, he’s always looked full of promise and should be tough to beat.

There are many notable absentees at the 48-hour declaration stage for the Lanzarote Hurdle, but there is still a strong field of 14 that have made the cut.

The obvious horse of interest is Notre Pari , who could be well-handicapped off 130 following three runs this season.

He was then stepped up to 2m4f last time out at Aintree and duly obliged, beating horses rated 138, 133 and 143 into second, third and fourth, respectively.

Further down, I like the prospects of the Suzy Smith-trained Debestyman , who is having his fourth run of the season. He was beaten out of sight at Plumpton in November, when he wouldn’t have been near fit enough.

He then ran very well at Newbury behind Champers on Ice and followed that with a great display at Cheltenham in December, when leading a competitive field until the final flight.

A reproduction of that will see him have a big chance of out-running his price.

The Classic Chase is always a good pointer when looking for Grand National clues and my fancy for the big race this year, Le Breuil , runs in this one, albeit off top weight.

He’s a very classy horse on his day, much better than the rest of this field, and I still think he’s well handicapped off 148.

He ran very well at Aintree last time, and under his talented young claimer Luca Morgan, will take some stopping over this marathon trip.

Last year’s winner Impulsive Star has been pulled up on his last three starts, but if a trip back to Warwickshire revives his spirits, he could run well.

Pertempts qualifiers are always tricky.

As mentioned on here previously, I’m a big fan of Tedham . He’s still well-handicapped and will have plenty of good days in the future so is a horse to keep on side.

He took a knock on Boxing Day and was withdrawn from an engagement at Wincanton, however, so how fit he is now remains to be seen.

It’s All Guesswork remains a horse to keep on side with his very shrewd connections.
