14.20 YORK

TOP PICK: HAMADA

Second choice: Contango

This is a very competitive 1m4f handicap to start York's May meeting, with eight scheduled runners. The tight nature of the race is illustrated by the prices, which show every horse at 10/1 or under in the early market.

Godolphin’s HAMADA may have the white cap, which usually signals second string, but is likely to start as a strong favourite after a reappearance win at Wolverhampton.

He’s up 5lb but looks incredibly well handicapped providing he can avoid a bounce after such a long layoff (19 months) prior to his last run.

His form of 1m2f win at Pontefract on the last start of his juvenile campaign puts him right in the frame here. He has a superb pedigree.

Contango can be excused his first run as a four-year-old as it took place at the quirky Epsom track, which doesn’t suit many horses. His form as a three-year-old was definitely good enough to win this.

14.20 York: Hamada

14.55 YORK

TOP PICK: CLASSIC SENIORITY

Second choice: Golden Apollo

Three recent victors of this six-furlong handicap were returned at 14/1, while the 2017 winner paid 25/1.

Horses younger than seven have dominated in the last decade with all ten wins; a stat that can eliminate six of the field, including the fancied Orion’s Bow, who may start favourite.

Older horses have featured in the first four places just five times since 2007. Tim Easterby’s gelding looks up against it on that basis and is best avoided.

The last ten winners all carried 9st 4lb or lower to victory, so we can eliminate Teruntum Star and Final Venture, who look to have too much on their backs to win such a competitive race.

CLASSIC SENIORITY is usually good for at least one decent Class 2 level handicap per season and is fit from a reappearance at Ripon last time out. He will suit this drying ground and is drawn in a favourable stall.

15.30 YORK

TOP PICK: HARRY ANGEL

Second choice: Brando

This Group 2 sprint has a small field, which also includes a couple of supposed no-hopers.

Shocks aren’t uncommon, possibly due to how early in the season this race is run. Even if you include the 5/2 and 5/1 favourites that won this in the last decade, the average winning SP in that time is still above 14/1 – including the 40/1 Glass Office in 2015.

Favourite HARRY ANGEL will be popular and is an unoriginal choice now that Tasleet is a non-runner.

17.35 YORK

TOP PICK: MOOLTAZEM

Second choice: Rake’s Progress

We end with a race over the same distance as the first in today’s competition.

This 1m4f handicap features slightly lower-rated horses than the 14.20, but this has double the number of runners and will be very hard to unravel.

MOOLTAZEM is being upped in trip here and that may suit after staying on over a 1m1f trip a couple of weeks ago. Jockey Paul Mulrennan is in fantastic form in the last few days and can add to his recent tally here.
