2.35 NEWBURY
TOP PICK: POET’S VANITY
Second choice: Global Applause
POET'S VANITY has won at a much higher level than this race and is thoroughly well-treated at the weights.
She’s fresh from a recent run on the all-weather at Kempton over seven furlongs.
That does seem to be her optimum distance, although six furlongs on this ever-galloping straight track at York does seem to sap stamina regardless of how far the horses have run before entering the business end of a race.
2.55 YORK
TOP PICK: DANCE DIVA
Second choice: Threading
Next up is a Listed fillies race over a mile with some decent-looking three-year-olds in a small field.
Sheikha Reika won well at Newmarket last time but looks a little short in the market.
Awesometank has some decent course form but she hasn’t run for over 200 days.
I'll plump for DANCE DIVA, who was third on seasonal reappearance and now steps up in trip to a distance that looks as though it will suit according to trainer Richard Fahey.
3.30 YORK
TOP PICK: STRADIVARIUS
Second choice: Count Octave
The prestigious Yorkshire Cup, a Group 2 for stayers.
STRADIVARIUS had a great 2017 and his 2018 reappearance sees him rightfully at the head of the market. He will be very hard to beat.
4.05 YORK
TOP PICK: CAPTON
Second choice: Banditry
Master Carpenter aims for back-to-back victories in this race, but the soft going last year played into his hands and he hasn’t ever won with ‘firm’ anywhere in the going description, despite lots of attempts.
CAPTON does have a few question marks against him, but overall looks a good selection based on his form towards the end of last season.
He has the assistance of Ryan Moore and can front run.
