Is Technician a contender for the St Leger?

The St Leger looks to be the next stop for Technician following his victory in the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury on Saturday.

Off level weights, I don’t think he’d have got to Morando, who was conceding a lump of weight to him.

In my opinion, Morando is a very good Group 3 horse, but you need to be slightly better than that to win a St Leger and I think Technician will just fall short to a flashier type.

I do, however, think that he’ll improve with age and experience and will run in all the better staying races next year.

What about Glorious Journey in the Prix de la Foret?

Glorious Journey was a convincing winner in the Hungerford Stakes, and now looks like he has started to understand what he’s supposed to do when going racing.

Seven furlongs with some cut in the ground seems to be his perfect conditions, which he’ll most likely get in the Foret.

He is very quick and travels well so, looking even further ahead, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him back over six furlongs at Royal Ascot next year.

Is Dakota Gold a Group horse in the making?

After watching Dakota Gold’s previous run back, where he won at York, I did quite fancy him for the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon.

I didn’t end up backing him as I’d already put some money on Great Prospector at 16/1 earlier in the week.

Of course, the writing was on the wall from early on and Dakota Gold won with some authority.

The Ayr Gold Cup is the next obvious race for him and, if he wins that, he’ll have to be considered or even tried as a Group horse.

Honourable mention

The Prix Morny on Sunday looked as strong a two-year-old race as we’ve seen so far this season.

However, having done some assessments of this year’s two-year-olds, I’m not convinced that they’re the best bunch of all time and still think that we’re yet to see the Classic winners of next year.

That being said, Earthlight is probably the best of the bunch and, in my opinion, deserves to be where Pinatubo is in the 2000 Guineas market.

Ones to watch this week

We’re being treated to another extraordinary few days of racing at York this week.

I love the look of the Gimcrack, with Monarch of Egypt, Threat and any of Kevin Ryan’s impressive two-year-olds all going head to head. That could be a real cracker.

From a betting point of view, I tend not to get too stuck in at York for various reasons.

But, if the reported time figures are true about Ten Sovereigns, then he should be backed in the Nunthorpe.
