Does Siskin have the makings of a Classic winner?

Friday night saw Siskin take the Phoenix Stakes, taking his tally to four from four.

It was great to have a Group 1 on a Friday night, even if the occasion was slightly dampened by the poor weather and a small field. More should be staged on days outside the weekend and the obvious big festivals.

With regards to Siskin, my opinion is similar to my verdict on Pinatubo last week.

They’re both clearly talented and ahead of their rivals at this stage, but there will be plenty more scopey types making their introductions between now and the end of the Flat season.

For that reason, I don’t think he’ll be winning a Classic next year.

Shergar Cup

The Shergar Cup divides opinion, but Ascot always attracts a great attendance and the fixture is clearly growing year on year.

I am a fan as the event offers something different in a bid to appeal to a new fanbase, and if racing can do anything to make the sport more popular, then I’m all for it.

It was great to see Hayley Turner win the Silver Saddle after some inspired rides at Ascot. She rides the Berkshire course brilliantly.

Where next for Addeybb?

Addeybb won his second race of the season on Saturday in the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster Stakes.

He now deserves a shot in a Group 1, though realistically he’d probably fall short unless it’s very soft ground and a small field.

He was a Group 2 winner at Sandown Park last year and looks better than ever this season.

He is clearly a much better animal on deeper ground and, if he was mine, I’d seriously campaign him in early spring and autumn when he’d get his favoured going.

The Prix Dollar at Longchamp on Arc weekend has a huge prize pot and is a fixture that is often accompanied with open heavens. Just saying…

Honourable mentions

Thanielle, trained by Richard Hannon, had a nice introduction at Newmarket on Saturday with a fourth in the Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

She won’t be long in winning, that’s for sure.

At Ascot, Power of Darkness looked a horse to keep on the right side of after winning the Shergar Cup Mile.

His trainer, Marcus Tregoning, knows what it takes to win a Cambridgeshire (having won it in 2012 and 2014 with Bronze Angel) and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him line up at Newmarket in the autumn.
