14.50 – ULTIMA HANDICAP CHASE

TOP PICK: VINTAGE CLOUDS

The last four winners of this race have been relatively close to the top of the market without being favourites, at prices of under 12/1.

We need to look at horses aged either seven or eight, since they account for eight of the last 10 winners, while those trained on UK soil also tend to dominate, with a winning run spanning over a decade.

Weight doesn’t seem to be a deciding factor, which is unusual for a Festival handicap, although the recent rain and change in going will not favour those carrying numbers in the upper reaches of the ratings.

VINTAGE CLOUDS looked as though he would be running into the money before he fell at the second-last fence in this race last year.

He's had a decent break so should be fresh to run his race, is proven on soft going, and has the assistance of Danny Cook in the saddle, who is approaching the 50-winner mark for the season.

Honourable mention: Beware The Bear

15.30 – CHAMPION HURDLE

TOP PICK: ELGIN

No doubt plenty of 4 To Win entries will include reigning champion Buveur D’Air, but in this instance it doesn’t pay to be part of the crowd.

While Nicky Henderson’s seven-year-old is a very worthy odds-on favourite, we need to look elsewhere to improve our share of the pot.

It's difficult to come back and retain these champion races, remember, so the stats are on our side.

ELGIN is a proven course performer after a thrilling win at Prestbury Park towards the end of last year.

He's yet to perform on heavy ground, but does have three wins on soft going, including a taking performance in the Betway Kingwell at Wincanton last time out.

His trainer Alan King also won this race in 2008 with Katchit.

16.50 – NATIONAL HUNT CHASE

TOP PICK: JURY DUTY

JURY DUTY has a trainer in Gordon Elliott who knows how to win this contest, with three of the last seven winners including Tiger Roll last year.

Amateur jockey Jamie Codd is one of the best in his field and has a 21 per cent strike rate on UK soil. He's also ridden five winners at the course in the last five years from just 29 rides.

The horse also hasn’t been out of the first two all season despite running in some of the best races around.

He is proven on soft ground and his sire, Well Chosen, has a progeny laden with stamina, so he's expected to stay the marathon four-mile trip. He is a confident selection.

Second choice: Pylonthepressure

5.30 – CLOSE BROTHERS HANDICAP CHASE

TOP PICK: MISTER WHITAKER

This Listed Handicap will take a lot of winning and, with only one winning favourite in the last decade, the market doesn’t usually provide many clues.

Seven of the last 10 winners have been aged either six or seven, so we’ll narrow the field down there.

The ratings will provide a tight handicap and the only real negative for those towards the top will be the soft ground, though top weights have managed to run well in this race in the past including Hunt Ball in 2012.

I like MISTER WHITAKER in the famous Radford colours, trained by Mick Channon, who is better known for training winners without obstacles in the way.

He was in the Cheltenham winners enclosure in January and will surely be thereabouts at the finish.

Second choice: Kayf Adventure
