The Mallard Handicap is a race for horses rated 0-105 over an extended 1m 6f.

The most appealing horse here is last year’s winner SLEEPING LION 9/2, who is still relatively lightly-raced.

He is just 3lb higher than his winning mark last year and it looks as though he’s been campaigned for this race.

He has run twice over 2m this season and the drop back in trip will suit him perfectly.

Not many horses in the field can boast form as good as CHIEFOFCHIEFS 8/1, who won the Silver Wokingham on his seasonal debut at Royal Ascot in June.

He has found his feet over 6f and even ran well back up in trip over 7f at Ascot last time out.

A drop back to 6f on genuine good ground looks tailor-made for this horse, who will again be partnered by William Buick.

The Flying Childers is a two-year-old race over 5f and I'm backing STEEL BULL 5/1 to get back to winning ways.

He had a valid excuse for a poor performance last time out in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes - knocking two teeth out in an accident in the starting stall - but ran very well despite that to finish seventh over 6f.

He drops back in trip to the minimum distance in this Group 2, and looks sure to go well under Jim Crowley.

The maiden race that ONE RULER 5/2 won at Sandown last month looked way above average to my eye. The third from that race has already been out and won a competitive maiden at Doncaster on Wednesday.

One Ruler travelled well and put the race to bed in good style that day, looking like a very smart horse in the making.

Royal Scimitar 6/1 was unfavourably positioned at York when he finished fourth in the Acomb Stakes but, with more cover from his draw in stall four here, he has a chance of getting closer than his last finishing position.
