Friday racing tips: Juniper Berries can pick off St Hugh's Stakes success

Visit Betway's horse racing betting page.

There are seven meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland on Friday as the weekend creeps in once more.

Afternoon action comes from Wolverhampton, Epsom and Newbury before they race in the evening at Cork, Thirsk and Newmarket as well as over jumps at Tramore.

The key action comes from Newbury via the Listed Highclere Thoroughbred Racing St Hugh's Stakes (15:45) and at Cork, where they host the Group 3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Give Thanks Stakes (17:52).

We have a trio of Friday fancies to follow, including the speedy filly Juniper Berries in Newbury’s feature race.

Selections

Juniper Berries @ SP (15:45, Newbury)

Shamida @ SP  (17:52, Cork)

Ray Vonn @ SP  (17:45, Newmarket)

Juniper Berries can pick off St Hugh's Stakes success

The Eve Johnson-Houghton trained JUNIPER BERRIES has enjoyed a pretty useful first campaign whatever happens from here, but a Listed victory would really add some lustre to her CV.

The Expert Eye filly looked good in her debut success at Bath over 5f in April and then finished second to the useful Relief Rally at Salisbury the following month.

They've met twice since, at Royal Ascot in the Queen Mary (second and fourth respectively) and in last month's Super Sprint here where Relief Rally won and Juniper Berries was only seventh.

Since that, the selection has taken a silver medal home from a Glorious Goodwood Conditions race, unable to match much-improved Flora Of Bermuda but, in turn, some three-lengths clear of today's rival Indispensable. That was another good effort from a filly that has shown lots of speed in her races.

It's likely that she has a win at this level in her and her experience could count for plenty here as she takes on the unbeaten pair Miaharris for Owen Burrows and Majestic Beauty for Alice Haynes. They, along with Karl Burke's Lady Pink Rose, are much-respected but Juniper Berries is streetwise now and might be good enough to take the St Hugh's Stakes for her in-form trainer under regular rider Charles Bishop.

Shamida the one for Weld at Cork

Cork's feature race is the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Give Thanks Stakes, a Fillies' And Mares' Group 3 over the mile-and-a-half distance. A field of eight are set to contest for the €39,000 top prize and they include Boogie Woogie (Ryan Moore) and Library (Seamie Heffernan) for trainer Aidan O'Brien.

It's the former that is forecast to head the betting. She won a heavy-ground Naas maiden (1m2f) in April and was second last-time-out in this grade at Chantilly in June. A pair of first-time cheekpieces are tried now and she has her chance but SHAMIDA is preferred for Dermot Weld and Chris Hayes.

The Aga Khan-owned daughter of Australia has run four times in her career, all at Leopardstown, winning a maiden there over this trip in May.

Most recently, she won a Group 3 over 1m6f at the Foxrock venue last month, coming through late on to earn a slender victory.

There's substance to her form and this drop back in trip won't inconvenience her. It's probable that more improvement is lurking and she has strong claims again.

Ray Vonn can call the tunes at Newmarket

A dozen runners will line up for the Source One Consulting Handicap over six-furlongs at Newmarket and amongst them is Galileo Gold gelding RAY VONN on his handicap bow.

The 3YO showed promise earlier in the year on the all-weather for Gay Kellaway before switching to the care of Ben Brookhouse in the spring.

He went close in a Wolverhampton maiden on stable bow in April and finished third at Kempton a fortnight later. That race was won by Docklands for Harry Eustace, who would make light of his opening handicap mark of 80 at Ascot in May and then defy a 14lb hike to win at Royal Ascot in June.

It's unlikely Ray Vonn can make such a blistering impact on his switch to this sphere but he does drop in distance now returning from a break and this opening mark of 68 could be within his compass. Having undergone a wind operation since he was last spotted, he's worthy of an interest in this open race.
