GOODWOOD
There’s a couple I like at Goodwood on Tuesday, with the bulk of my fancies coming at Galway.
The Lennox Stakes looks like it'll be going the way of KINROSS 5/4 and Frankie Dettori on his last Glorious Goodwood (16:00). Kinross loves these conditions on soft ground and 7f is perfect for him. He ran really well in the July Cup over 6f and this step up won’t be a hindrance. Of the shorter-priced favourites of the next few days, he looks the most solid.
The Goodwood Cup is the feature race on day one in Sussex, and although you have to respect the first two in the betting, I do think EMILY DICKINSON 6/2 looks a great each-way bet (16:35). While we don’t know if the favourite will relish soft ground, we know that she will. She looked really good at the Curragh 10 days ago, and I’m sure she’s better at this trip of 2m. I think Ryan will ride her a touch closer to the pace and I do expect her to finish in the first three.
GALWAY
Willie Mullins has a very strong hand in the opener, but it looks like ABSURDE 10/11, the chosen mount of Paul Townend, is going to take all of the beating (17:10). I thought his run at Royal Ascot behind Vauban was very good and he’ll have conditions to suit here, which should make him very tough to beat. He does have to concede weight all around, which won’t make it easy, but he could be quite smart.
The 18:40 is the big Mile Handicap and there are two I like.
JOE MASSERIA 15/2 is a real mud lover, so he’ll appreciate all the rain that’s fallen down here in Ballybrit. He got motoring at the line at Killarney last time and we know he likes the track as he won at this meeting last year. I think he’ll be there or thereabouts at the finish.
The other is ALANYA 10/1, who is really unexposed but could be much better than her current mark. She won really well at the Curragh last time and I thought she did well to get just an 8lb rise - it could have been more as she really bolted up. I think the drop in trip could be a plus and she has a good draw, too.
The last one who catches my eye on Tuesday is PLUNKETT 7/1, who has gone well here in the past (19:50). He is now dangerously well handicapped and will be of appeal to plenty. He gets his favoured soft ground and his run at Leopardstown last time was very good despite missing the break.
