Roger Varian’s horses have been in great form since the resumption of racing in the UK and they continue to perform well. Seventy-one per cent of them have run to form in the past 14 days.

He saddles the lightly-raced WALIYAK  in the opening race. She looks as though she could be very well handicapped off her mark of 87.

She has improved after each of her first two starts as a two year old – both of which worked out well - breaking her maiden tag at the third time of asking, winning convincingly at Wolverhampton.

The form of that race has been franked time and time again since. She was put away for winter and made her seasonal debut this year in the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot, where she was very well-backed on the day.

She travelled like the best horses in the race and only got beaten by the wet sail of the eventual winner, who has won a Listed race in France since.

She won’t be the biggest price in this race, but she must go close if she’s in the same sort of form that she showed in that run at Ascot last month.

The final race on day two of Glorious Goodwood is the Theo Fennell Handicap, a race for horses race 0-95 over 7f.

There isn’t a great deal between all of these horses on official ratings, so you could make a case for plenty but I like the the Richard Fahey-trained three-year-old TORO STRIKE  .

He made his debut in a Conditions race at Newbury, which suggests his trainer thought he was capable of acquitting himself well in a contest that is always strong.

He was successful on his next start and ran well in defeat on his next three, finishing second, third and third. That final run came in the Doncaster Sales race, which is always above average for the grade.

He made his seasonal debut this year in the Britannia Handicap over a mile and looked as though he would be a real danger at one point. But the leaders got away and he stayed on well to finish fifth.

The drop in trip back to seven furlongs won’t inconvenience him and it’s good to see the stable has booked Champion Jockey Oisin Murphy, who has a 75 per cent strike rate when riding for the trainer.
