Among the winners on Saturday

I still don’t know how Winston C won his race up at Kelso last Saturday.

Firstly, the ground had dried up a fair bit and in those conditions he really wants a bit further.

Thankfully they went a strong gallop and, despite having only had one behind him turning in, Sean Bowen managed to weave him through and get up in the nick of time.

It was a very good ride, he got it spot on.

The horse has gone up another 5lbs and we’ve entered him in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr.

He’s also qualified for a valuable novices’ handicap hurdle at Sandown on the last day of the season.

If we’re sticking to two miles we’d like to have some slightly slower ground, so we’ll wait and see. Hopefully he’s not finished for the season just yet.

On the same card, Captain Drake was a good second running over 3m2f for the first time.

It was a nice effort considering the ground would have been too quick for him as well and they didn’t go any real gallop.

It turned into a bit of a sprint and he wasn’t doing much more towards the finish than just staying on.

He’s qualified for the Challenger Series Final at Haydock on Easter Saturday. We’ll see nearer the time whether we take that up or not.

Again, we’d like to see a bit of rain before then.

Looking further ahead, we think he’s going to make a nice staying novice chaser for next season.

I was delighted that everything went to plan with Get In The Queue at Newbury.

We knew after Noel Fehily announced his retirement at Cheltenham that Get In The Queue would hopefully be the one for him to bow out on.

Things don’t always work out that well so we’re just so relieved with the way it turned out.

The horse is now three from three in bumpers and a very promising novice hurdle prospect for the Rooneys to have next season.

He’s already gone off on his holidays for the summer and we’ll look forward to seeing back on the racecourse over hurdles in the autumn.

He’s schooled plenty already and is an exciting young horse with a bright future.

Pogo jumps off at Uttoxeter

Pogo I Am runs in the mares’ bumper (17:35) and we’re hoping she’s good enough to win.

She took a big step forward from her first run to finish second at Plumpton last time and hopefully she can improve again.

She was doing all her best work at the end and we’re hoping a galloping track like Uttoxeter will suit her.

The quicker ground won’t be a problem as she’s not too big.

It’s been two weeks since we’ve had any real rain so it’s going to be a quiet weekend for us.

We’ve got a few spring-summer horses that are almost ready to kick on again after a winter break, but they are not quite there just yet.

Big guns on target for Aintree

Bags Groove, If The Cap Fits, Unowhatimeanharry and Hell’s Kitchen are all set to run at Aintree next week.

I couldn’t be happier with the way they’re working at home and I think we’re going there with four genuine Grade One contenders.

Hell’s Kitchen ran a very nice race in the Betway Champion Chase, but we deliberately kept the others fresh for Aintree.

We’re really looking forward to it.
