We have a minefield of a handicap to start off, with a scheduled field of 20 horses going around the bends of the Knavesmire.
Jockeyship will play a huge part. The roll call of winners for this race includes experienced jockeys only and no claiming pilots in the last decade.
Jim Crowley won this last year on Fidaawy from a middle draw. That seems to be a favourable berth, with seven of the last 10 winners coming from a draw between six and 12 inclusive.
Horses aged four have also dominated with the last five victories.
That leaves three horses that tick the right boxes: FIRST NATION, Never Surrender and Atkinson Grimshaw.
I’ll opt for the former as he’s a lightly-raced Godolphin horse, the like of which always seem to excel in these races.
