The Dante meeting at York has a history of big-priced winners, possibly due to its proximity to the start of the season.

Some horses are having their seasonal reappearance on the Knavesmire and consequently fail to find the kind of previous form that has propelled them to the head of the market.

Another angle is that some horses who have already made their reappearance and run badly have been written off, drifting to bigger prices than their overall form justifies.

It makes it a tricky meeting for punters, but here are my best picks...

14.20 – Jorvik Handicap

This actually looks more straightforward than the rest of the card and it can go to likely favourite HAMADA  .

The Godolphin team have been among the winners of late, and that extends to trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick who have both roughly hit a 25 per cent strikerate in the past fortnight.

He goes up 5lb after easily winning at Wolverhampton last time out.

That was a confidence-boosting start to his four-year-old season, having missed the whole of his three-year-old campaign.

This race has had a winning favourite in three out of the last five seasons and it’s exciting to see him back on the racetrack.

16.05 – Musidora Stakes

This one is an Oaks trial on the card at 4.05 featuring just seven fillies and most are unexposed, as you’d expect from classic contenders at this stage of the season.

Trainer John Gosden has won this five times in the last seven seasons, with jockey Frankie Dettori teaming up with him to ride Star Of Seville to success in 2015.

The same trainer, jockey duo won it again in 2016 with So Mi Dar and then brought up the hat-trick 12 months ago with Shutter Speed.

They have Highgarden  here as they try to make it four from four.

She looks opposable given her ordinary run at Sandown last time out – a race that didn’t read that well on the clock.

DANCING BRAVE BEAR looks overpriced given what she has already achieved, albeit in lower grade races.

She might just find the required grit to see this out at a big price and beat shorter priced contenders.

16.05 York: Dancing Brave Bear

17.05 – Novice Stakes

The first juvenile race of York’s season takes place here and it’s gone to horses making their debut twice in the last decade.

But, as with most two-year-old races from May onwards, the prize usually goes to a runner with previous experience of the racetrack.

WORLD ORDER  was narrowly beaten by No Lippy on his debut at Doncaster back in late April.

She then went on to win at Chester last week and franked that form to a decent degree. Take World Order to win this for the Declan Carroll stable.
