We had four runners this past week, with two victories via Tough Enough and Cherry Blossom. The latter is no doubt the star of the show and I'm a little surprised that her demolition of a maiden field at the Curragh did not attract more attention. Backed in from odds-against, she clocked a time less than one tenth slower than Bucanero Fuerte recorded in winning the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes later in the card. I will be bitterly disappointed if she does not prove Group class herself, with the Cheveley Park or Rockfel looking potential targets before the end of the season. She is retained.
The others are all let go. Tough Enough did his job while Gavi Di Gavi looked the winner for a long way before finishing second at Salisbury. He was well handled by his amateur rider Oscar Palmer, who looks a lad to keep onside in similar events, but seemed to have no excuses on the day. Alazwar finished fourth, not stepping up on his Newbury run, and is also released.
Being away last week meant I watched less racing than usual, but MAGGIE'S WAY is added off the back of her sixth in the Listed Fillies and Mares race at Haydock. As long as connections do not persist in aiming for black type, her handicap mark looks very workable, especially with cut in the ground.
BRIAR ROSE would have finished far closer on debut at Windsor with anything like luck in running. It was not Billy Loughnane’s finest hour as he also briefly dropped the reins. Ed Dunlop is having a good time with his juveniles and she is eligible to run in lower-grade races than she did here. Hopefully she can be entered up with that in mind and prove a sleeping beauty.
